    Hey Michael,
Really Nice 1871 PR. This must be the "look".The frost on Liberty and the great strike make this an exceptional CAM. Was it the carbon flecks that kept the grade down? The field stuff before the chin and above and to the right of the "of" and the small spot below the date don't seem that significant. Maybe it is just an undegraded 66. What do you think?

yes i am sure this one was dipped but oh what a dip!!!!! the coin came out perfect without any residue at all

of course there are signs of age on this coin but that is to be expected especially so with a proof coin with such an unstable hard alloy of nickel and copper!

and yes the flecks is what kept this coin from an easy 66 grade. the flecks are just the impurities in the alloy that rose to the surface so to speak.

these coins when made were not even close to perfect but the overall look is what makes this coin so special

remember the mint was not as advanced back in 1871 as it was today in 2002 and still did and overall terrific job on this above coin!!
you cant look at mid 19 century coins/proof coins with an alloy like this coin and expect it to look like a copper nickel proof coin minted with todays 2002 technology!!

but overall to me it is still prettier than any modern proof coinage!! and amazing to survive and even look like this!!

    thanks for the great comments

  • Michael,

This is a great coin! What beautiful thick frosted devices and deep mirrors for such an old coin. I have always thought that this is one of the nicest designs in US coinage. Coinage like this is what draws me to the classics.

Thanks for always posting such great coins.
