    Michael,
In the past couple months, you have posted pics of some of the most amazing coins ever!

Are these in your personal collection? If so, congrats, and how do you find these? At auction or through high-end dealers? How long have you been collecting to put together such amazing type coins?

  • Michael,

This coin has outstanding eye appeal. The coin has what looks to be a number of small carbon spots. Is this a common problem with 36 satin proof nickels? The carbon spots are small enough not to be too distracting on this example though. I really like this one!

Thank you again for posting another fantastic coin.

hi there mike these are NOT carbon spots they are way to small they are just fly specks and you are right not large enough to be distracting

caused by the nickel alloy a common thing and when the coin really toned like this then the impurities in the alloy also changed to these dark fly specks on the surface of the coin making them visible

remember this coin is blown up like 20 times and then are not that distracting i mean in person they are hardly noticeable and are just part of the toning and minting process

now of course i understand that without these flecks this coin would be a no brainer 68 coin and then worth with this toning probably at around 17,500 personally i would rather have this coin in a 67 holder with absolutely no marks or hairlines looking like this and probably the best colored proof 67 satin 1936 coin at 20% of the 68 price!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The buffalo nickel dies were resurfaced through polishing to extend the lifespan and the repolishing resulted in some varieties like the 3-legged bison and the two-feather Indian.

The third feather, in the space between the longest feather and the back of the neck sometimes was polished to the point that it wouldn't appear on the coin during striking. I didn't know if this was the case with proofs?

Here's a LINK to a strong third feather 36 proof.

I wonder if there are graduations in the 2- to 3- feather presence?
ANACS attributes them as 2-feather varieties, possibly some other slabbers do too?

hi there blade these coins aew currewntly in an eastern collection that is located in the same city as i live in so i was able to examine them in person!! the owner is just a small collector a privaste person and likes to show and tell coins for others to see and learn and apprecaite and really see waht top quality is!!!!!!!!!!!!

and in answer to your question where did you find these from hi end dealers or auctions and how long did it take you

well all these coins in this eastern collection were mostly but not all but mostly from two dealers in coins the dealers either bought them through their inside coin contacts
    or thruogh auction for resale
the eastern collection owner was looking for monster top quality finest known coins but for the most part coins that were great with monster exceptional eye appeal! the two dealers for most of the coins were

LEGEND numismatics laura and george and PINNACLE RARITIES mark feld and scott

libertad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thnask for the great information this buff pictured that is monster toned is the three feather variety it doesnot show up in the scan photo too well but in pewrson you cvan see the third feather!!

i always learn something on here and i always wondered waht that third feather was now i know..........lol thanks to you libertad!!!!!!!!

    sincerely michael
