do you agree with the grade..edited to show bigger pics

I have two pics (obv and rev) of an 1889 seated quarter. The biggest drawback are the marks on the field on the
rev. coin seems to have some prooflike apearance and cameo (?) looking on both sides.

Text: 1889 obverse

Text: 1889 reverse

Thanks and have a great weekend

Fred

edited to show larger pics and toning is actually nicer than in picsimage

It would be nearly impossible to assign a lofty grade like that with a picture.

No matter what that holder says, that coin is awesome!

That's a business strike? Wow! Beautiful piece!

Very good strike. I think it is borderline 66-67.
Looks like a few pits on the obverse as well as above the eagle and a mark on the left below the reverse banner.
  • Wow you can see the mouth and the eyes on Miss Liberty. That is one fine coin

    Whoa.

    I don't see why I wouldn't agree with the grade. There's a monster! image

(Say, those were some bloody huge pics...)

  • That looks super nice for a MS coin.

I guess I like it so much because it appears proof like and I like proofs image

Are those marks in the field around the Eagle's head? If so I might say 66 but the eye appeal sure makes up for that...

I look at coin like this one as gem++, with superb eye appeal. Forget the actual number assigned, do you like the coin for the price it is at? It's a beautiful piece.

The ticks are a bit much for a 67 but I guess NGC gave it a little extra for the toning and PL qualities.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

It is very nice, good strike, I think it could go either way 66 or 67.

I'd have to agree though it's hard to tell from such a large pic

business-strike quarters minted at philly from 1879 - 1890 are well-known for their cameo proof-like appearance because the proof dies were re-used to mint the circulating coins. i like these dates because of their rediculously low mintages, but they are surprisingly common coins compared to other dates.

this may sound weird if your not familiar w/ these dates, but the dates are actually more difficult to obtain in VF/XF than in unc, ie. they're more rare in circulated grades!

because they are so proof-like in appearance, i believe they are among the easiest coins to overgrade due to "eye-appeal". but i don't see any reason to disagree w/ your coin.

same comments are true for seated halves from the same dates, & dimes as well. most common in unc, usually look like proofs.

It is difficult for me to appreciate any faults from the scan. The colors do not show well; please describe them. It looks like a really nice coin on my screen. I and I suspect most others on this forum would be pleased to have this coin in their collection. Thanks for sharing it with us!

That is one awesome coin. Of course one would have to see it in person, but I can see that having the MS-67 grade. A super coin in any event.
