Anybody going to the Kirkland-Eastside coin show a week from today?

It's at the Best Western Inn. I'm thinking about setting aside my loathing for the Eastside and heading up there.image (Washington State, BTW).

Yea !!... But only if I do not get my Coins back from a Flakey Seattle Dealer that has had them for 5 Months. His Shop is less than 2 Miles from where this Show is held. Matter of fact he may be at this show. So if you see a Guy about 6'1 and 200 Lbs with Grey/Brown hair raising Hell with a Dealer you will know who it is.

  • I've been to it several times, I think it's the same one that swings through Issaquah too. Even when I lived about 2000 miles closer than I do now, it was still a toss-up whether it was worth attending. image Maybe a dozen dealers, most with pretty tired inventory.

Next time it's in Issaquah, though, it's worth a trip for an excellent Chinese restaurant. I don't remember the name right now but it's next to the Taco Time. Proprietor owned and friendly, maybe a buck or two more than a cheapo restauarant. The Lemon-Grass Fish is superb.

    Sigh.*

    * Midwest sweet-n-sour chicken anyone?
  • Sorry Hoss - your ride is tied up at the Gem Show.

Guess we'll have to have them coordinate better next time eh? image
  • PS -- If you head out to the Kirkland one, stop by Redmond and go to Kikuya for superb Japanese food.

Man, I gotta fly somewhere and get some decent eastern food. image
  • I will try to go. I live in redmond so its a 10 minute ride. Russ - If you go let me know. I would like to meet you and pick your brain about Kennedys for a little bit. I have 21 proof 69's and would like some feedback on them. They are all NGC. In addition, the NGC registry set has a type 1 and 2 for 1979 and same for 1981. My holders say 79 UC and 79 CL S UC for the and the 81 doesnt address the type. How do I tell the difference? I do not have any literature on Kennedys. Thanks.

    lincolnSence,

On the '79 Type 1, the "S" is flattened, closed off and indistinct. Barely even looks like an S. On the Type 2 it's crisp and well formed.

It's a little more difficult to tell the difference on the '81 coins. On the Type 1 the "S", while fully formed and distinct, is a touch fatter and slightly raised with a sort of "ridge" on the top. On the Type 2, the S is more rounded looking and the loops are slightly more seperated. Frankly, on the '81's I have a hard time distinguishing unless I have comparison pieces handy.

  • lincolnSence, last I knew NGC uses CL S for "Clear-S" on their slabs in place of "Type 2". It's a particularly misleading term for the 81-S Type 2, because the mintmark on both 1981-S types is "clear". In fact the 1979-S Type 2 is the same as the 1981-S Type 1.

In the Red Book, you can see good photos of all three varieties in the SBA dollar section -- the same mintmark variations apply to all proof coin denominations of 1979-1981.
  • Whatsa matter Russ? Afraid a yuppie might slop their latte on your Accented Hair? image

Have never seen anything but worn out, "recycled" coins there. I'm into rare coins, not Morgans......quit going a while ago.

  • Russ, supercoin and Clark - thanks for the info. It was spot on. Perhaps I'll see some of you in Kirkland.

Supercoin's comment of "a pretty tired inventory" is spot on. I go to this show about 80% of the time, but it's pretty weak. I rarely leave with anything but a thick wallet. Very little new inventory.

Dale (the guy by the door) puts on the show, and he usually has the nicest/newest stuff.

    I might go....might not.

Have You checked Steve from Vancouver Rare Coin. He usually is there and lately he has been getting some stuff into his shop. Ask to see the 1916 SLQ if he still has it. Also he had a almost full set of SLQ's that were on consignment I believe. Maybe he bought them. Some of the Coins were Very, Very nice.

Outside of that I guess the next best would be Hart Rare Coins. Art and Jim get stuff from time to time also. Art just came back from Long Beach so maybe he picked some stuff up. Lately he has been into Washington Quarters pretty hot and heavy.

    Outside of that....Ho Hum.
