Just sold my #5 20th C. Gold Major Design Type Set (1900-1933). I got all the coins upgraded to MS63 and got back into the top five for a time. All MS63 was my goal, though I could have gone on to pull at least the Saint and maybe one or two others up to 64-65. It would have been nice to get the pedigree and see "Lord Marcovan" on a PCGS label (if they would do that, and not my last name). However, it's a moot point, since I sold the set tonight, and will be deleting it in the next day or two. The 8-pc gold type was a fun little set; short but challenging. Also, the heavyweights like High Desert and Bill Walser didn't bother with that set, so some of us little guys had (have) an opportunity to bask in the limelight.
I'm out of the gold biz for a while, except for maybe holed pre-1900 gold (US and foreign) for my new Holey Gold Hat., which is an accessory to the infamous "Holey Coin Vest". (No, there are no "Holey Coin Trousers" planned for the future!) If they ever have a Registry for raw, holed coins, I'll be the king, LOL...
This wraps up my Registry activity, as that little gold set was the last hand I had in the game. I still plan to be buying some nice PCGS/NGC type coins, but will probably not go with any structured set for a while. I'm gonna go "freestyle" for a bit. You never know- I might go back to a structured pursuit one day.

I just haven't decided where I'm gonna go yet. The gold set was fun, but I want to play with 19th C. proofs.
Hmm... maybe 2c pieces...
By now, everyone around here should know how wishy-washy I am... I pick up a pursuit, chase it for a year or two, finish it, sell it, and go on to something else. It might seem an odd way to collect things, but I have fun. The collector and the dealer in me swing back and forth into the driver's seat at different times.
I guess I'm the tiniest bit schizophrenic, numismatically speaking.
I love it all, but can't collect it all. So I just enjoy the thrill of the hunt. Once I bag something, the trophy doesn't hang on my wall for very long before I'm out hunting something else...
You can get your set pedigreed and name that you desire. I had my commemorative set pedigreed "Overland Trail". Quite fitting for that kind of set, but you can name it anything you want as long as it has not been taken already.

Personally I would like to see you freelance for a while as it is a lot of fun. Try doing one denomination only for a while......much easier to freelance but yet allow you to be in a smaller environment.
Just some ideas.
I am still trying to figure out what I am doing myself. Supposedly I was supposed to stick only with dimes and double eagles.
Mrcommem- thank you for that information. I had always wondered that, but you are the first to give me a definitive answer to the question. Maybe I can get a pedigreed 2c proof set.
The #1 on that Registry looks tough, maybe impossible to to beat, but Top Five shouldn't be any problem... heck, with three sets currently registered, I could debut in the top five with a single coin in my set!
I like it. It's a short-but-challenging set, like the gold I just completed, and has a lot going for it. The coins are bigger around and as visually appealing as 3cN proofs, and I see less of them. It's enough off the beaten path that I might just go for it. I do prefer the road less traveled.
<< <i>I think a holey coin bumbershoot would be just fantastic! >>
Nice idea, monstavet, but it would be too unwieldy, not very waterproof, and who would want expose his precious old coins, even holed ones, to the rain?
(That would be WAY too far off the beaten path!)
Oreville- you mean a Seated Type set, like the 23 coins I sold you the week of the 9/11 disaster? In proof, that would be impressive. But the earlier Seated stuff in proof would be lethal. (Did they even strike the No Stars coins in proof? The Arrows and Rays? I can only imagine the pricetags on such things would be prohibitive, to say the least.)
I am almost to the point of taking the plunge into the 2c pieces. But I have a week or two until the money from the sale of my gold set is in hand and mine to spend, so that gives me time to consider things.
