The Best Football Set on the Registry?

Until now, I think hands down the best football set on the registry has been Don Louchios's 1935 National Chicle with an 8.35 set rating.
Now one has just recently appeared that has the potential of beingn the undisputed king. Wes Verno has posted a 1955 Topps All-America Set with 77 nines(including I believe all the biggest cards), 20 eights and three missing. It has a weighted avg. of 8.84. Even if the three gaps were filled with 8s, this would, in my opinion, qualify as the most impressive set on the registry.
This is the first set, probably the most desirable and sought after Topps set and I think quite an accomplishment.
Hey Rob Ruth--you have a great set but isn't this unbelievable!

Most impressive - amazing number of vintage PSA 9s! It gets my vote as the number 1 football set.

Where these cards a recent submission or in Wes' possession for some time?

Davalillo, with your multisport PSA set collecting, how does this set compare with other high end non-football PSA registry sets?
  • Wow! What an amazing set!! That gets my vote but one other set that I think is very impressive is Paul Kaufman's 1952 Bowman Large set with a 8.10 rating. He has quite a set put together with many 9's and even a 10.

  • Another great set is Stonegates 1955 Bowman Football Set. With a 160 cards in the set. With a grade weight of 8.30 and 100% complete. He has 1 PSA 10 and 51 PSA 9's. Pretty impressive. Also he is a great person to deal with.

It's funny someone mentioned Stonegate's 55 Bowman set. I was just looking at his set.
I would vote for his set.

The 55 bowman is a neat set - very colorful. I wonder how hard it is to do in nm/mt or even
nm range. Does anyone know if the cards sell for Smr or better? Also, would a nm set have
any longterm value? Or is a nm/mt set the way to go? I have a few raw cards from the set
but never looked into completing a graded one.

  • I noticed there's a new 1971 Kellogg's football set that deserves to be in the conversation. It's an 8.54. I think it's missing a couple of cards.

  • Thanks for the kind words on the '55 Bowman set -- couldn't have done it with out the excellent deals with fellow collectors Alohaet, Davalillo, and Neil Diterichs. Also Rick Snyder of Mint State Inc. and Mark Murphy were key in a number of the 9s and the 10. Anyone come across #98 Massey in an 8 or a raw one in NMMT or better, let me know!

For football sets that are 100% complete, I think that a couple of amazing one's are 707 Sportscards 1965 Topps -- it's "only" at a weighting of 7.60, but when you consider the best possible is 7.68 it's an incredible set. Same with Art Miller's 1966 Topps that's at 100% at 7.88 with a best possible of 8.13. Possibly the most intriguing Football set on the Registry is the Mastronet 1960 Cardinals Mayrose Franks which is complete at 11 cards with all 11 being 9s and the best existing cards. So far it's the only vintage football Perfect Set where the rating equals the Finest Possible Rating -- although something screwy is going on with the '70 & '71 Kellogg's sets where a number of sets are better than the Finest Possible.

But I think that the Best Football Set on the Registry is William Gray's 1948 Leaf set which is an unreal accomplishment at 100% with a rating of 7.86 while Finest Possible is 7.91 - it's got 20 of the 26 9s in existence in it (there are no 10s)!

Let me second that Stonegate is a fine person to deal with and has helped me
plenty on my 1955 Bowman FB set.
Thanks again Kevin, you are a class act.

All of the above are fine examples!!! However, IMHO, the best football set of all-time is the 1972 Football set. This set has over 50 HOF player cards, an excellent design, and not to mention a tuff high series.

With a finest possible rating of 8.51, John D. McLane - 1972 Topps Football - The Number One All Time Finest Set is on pace to match the number with a current rating of 8.61 and a 92.02 completion percentage.

John has 7 PSA 10's, and 145 PSA 9's. Amazing!!!!
