How did my IHC turn black

I have an 1897 IHC that is is in Fine condition, problem free, no corrosion,
not painted, etc, but is solid black. What could have happened to coin,
any ideas?

    It came in contact with something that tarnished it somewhere in it's travels. It could have been burned, buried, kept in a leather coin purse, exposed to chemicals, who knows for sure.
    Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
