technically, can I use an old proof set for my type set?

IE. I have several old 1956 proof sets because it was my birth year. Can those be used in my 20th century type set? Or should they be business strikes? Just curious.

It depends on what you want. Some people only want bussiness strikes others are happy with a mix of both. Me, I'm build one all in proof except the Standing Liberty quarter and the Peace dollar. I have everything except the Barbers and the Buffalo now.

Depends which set you are building... one is circulation strikes only. Couldn't use those there.

Type means an example of each type of coin and Proof is merely different manufacturing process used for that example.
One of the reasons I got out of the Registry Set Rat Race was that I had rare high grade high priced Mint State coins and other collectors were outranking me with their sleazy $30 Teletrade Pr. 69 DCams.
However PCGS now provides both MS & Prf and mixed sets catagories.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
