2 Headed coins?

Hi all! This question is for anyone that will respond with your thoughts.

This past week I had the task of removing the contents of my grandfathers bank safety deposit box. In the box I found this 2 headed 1967 quarter. I am aware that they make 2 headed gag coins. My two questions are...

1. Is there a possibility that it is a mint mess up?

2. On ebay they say they cut 2 quarters and the fuse them together, would I see some sort of fusing? I just cant to see any differences in ridges or anything.

So if you can answer either one of those questions please do!

If it is possible that its real is there anyway to really know?

Thank You in advance!

  • If you weigh the coin it should be the same weight as a regular 1967 quarter 6.25 grams. CHRIS

Only one authentic two-headed quarter has ever been discovered, so the odds are overwhelming that yours is a magician's coin.

They machine out one side of the coin while leaving the rim intact (this forms something like a shallow "dish") then machine another coin down so it drops neatly inside the rim. You might be able to feel an edge there.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • Thanks guys! You were right, I was looking around the edges (sides) Didn't even think about the face itself. Sure enough there is a ridge on the one side.

    Thanks!

I have (10) 2 headed or 2 tailed coins CERTIFIED in my ebay store. In addition to those, there are (3) that Fred Weinberg has. These are among the rarest type of mint error. Here is the link to my ebay store with all 10 listings including photos and descriptions:

I can't even afford to click his link image
  • That's the first time I looked at Michael Byers' ebay store. I think he should charge admission!! I really enjoyed looking at all the different types of errors. My favorite was the Franklin on a Roosevelt planchet! The largest coin on the smallest planchet!!!
Those off-metal errors may be my favorite.
