Trade secrets

I know if everyone started devulging all the little secrets of the trade here, the earth might spin off its axis and .....lol

What ,if anything,CAN be devulged in this day and age about old`tricks of the trade`?

More exciting would be to hear of recent`insider`knowledge of the hobby,ie;pre-coin show dealer discussions.
I heard that ....some huge percent of the all coin sells that go on are among dealers just prior to any given coin show? I suppose that makes since, many / most are collectors themselfs.

BTW,Please pass the tartar sauce would ya? image

I like this type of thread also.

Here's a question for dealers that won't get them in any trouble if they answer: I have read often about how certain dealers "promote" certain coins to push up the price. In a nutshell, they accumulate a quantity while the coin is stagnant, then start raising their bids to get people to take notice. They buy as the bids keep increasing, but the bulk of the stock was accumulated before prices started to rise. When the price is high enough, they sell them all and quit buying.

Not that anyone here would ever be involved with such a thing, but... does the rest of the dealer community know when one of these pump-and-dump operations is being run?

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

My secret is not letting my coin collecting be a secret. I have been given some great U.S. and world coins simply because I metioned that I'm a collector. I have had people give me coins because they figure that when they die, their own children would not "respect" the coins and would simply hawk them for the cash. I tell them that my intentions as a collector is to have examples of coins from our past that I can show future generations. To date I've been given several large cents, bust coinage, a Spanish 8 reales, a 10 rubles Russian palladium balarena, 1903 5 rubles gold coin, etc. I'm sincere as I've kept every coin that I've been given and one day I hope to be able to do as I said and "show future generations!" image
