I have been finding so many State Quarter die cracks compared to other Washington Quarters. WHY?

  • I haven't noticed any, Pat. Are you getting these out of pocket change or proof/mint sets?

I don't know that there are in fact more die cracks on the SQs than on the previous quarters, but assuming there are, it's probably because the Mint has only 10 weeks to strike a hundreds of millions of each SQ, and being pressed for time they might not be as consciencious about monitoring the output. Also, they probably only have a certain number of each die and need to make sure they can generate the necessary mintage, which might cause them to use the dies longer.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • Pat,

I've been noticing die cracks (almost exclusively at the bust) on many Mint State State Quarters (that's a mouthful). It seems the mint is pushing the dies quite far, considering that the strike quality of E Pluribus Unum is always sandwiched and the Liberty is almost always flat and edged (compared to proofs and compared to mint state Washingtons from my previous collecting efforts).

I think that it exhibits a weakness in the design of the die on the obverse, in this case, since they can use the same exact obverse on any state quarter within a given mint (with no date or differentiation, they can be used interchangeably between "states").

Yes that is correct. The ones that I have are mostly on the neck. A lot of the Georgia coins have little cracks at the ends of the banners. A few of the North Carolinas have them at the ends of the planes wings. The Kentucky coins have them on the roof and look like lightening strikes.
