I'd like to hear some opinions from some intelligent sports fans on this

Me and my brother were discussing the other day the value of NFL second round picks vs. NBA second round picks. In the NBA, you're basically just looking for a guy who can contribute anything, and if you he makes the roster that's a bonus. In the NFL, if you want to stay competitive, those picks will yeild very solid starters.

Would love to hear opinions on why this is...are football draft picks easier to project and less of a crapshoot, or is the talent pool just that much larger?

Comments

  • If you look at the roster spot differences football has the advantage all the way with all the levels of squads they have and the way they can see a talent on the practice sqaud and move him up. The talent pool isn't any larger from one to the other it's just easier for the football guys to change the levels since they are already signed to a contract with the team they practice with.
  • Another reason football players at that level do better in thier league
is they are better athletes. They are far more conditioned to perform
even when injured.Unlike basketball players who have to sit out when they have a sore toe or a hang nail.
The setup the football players can practice at prior to making the main squad is more equal also versus the NBA with thier sorry excuse for a minor league;the NBDL-what a joke!

  • Bobstar, if i read the title right, he said he wanted intelligent people to respond, not babbling retarded monkeys who voice their undeucated, nonfactual opinion. It's a bit obvious as to why football has a larger talent pool, let's do some math-- a college football team dresses about 45 players, compared to a basketball teams 12. Let's just focus on Division 1-A, whereas there are approximately 115 teams. That means that D-1A FB dresses and makes available 5,175 players playing 24 positions (11 Offense, 11 defense, kicker, and punter) plus special teams. While D-1A basketball dresses 1,380 and is looking to fill a whopping 5 positions. It should be apparent to anyone BUT retarded monkeys that FB is going to produce a larger talent pool.

Basketball players are also much better athletes, as they don't get a 1 minute rest between EVERY single play, and they don't sit out half of the game. Basketaball players have to play offense and defense, and not sit on the sideline and suck up water and oxygen for half of the game. Basketball players must be strong, quick, have leaping ability, fast, and have something that only a FB running back needs: ENDURANCE. Football players have to bust their butts for 3-7 seconds, and then they get a 30-45 second rest, and that is even if their squad is on the field. Why else would a huge, FAT, 6'3", 340 lb. offensive lineman be able to do it?? You are telling me that that fat slob is a better athlete than Kobe, T-Mac, etc?? If so, then maybe you are as dumb as everyone thinks you are

Jerik hit it right on the head... I believe the NFL has 60 roster spots... with as he mentioned 24 available positions plus special teams... with all players playing both sides of the ball.. it would take 14 years to fill all the spots via first round draft picks! Most NFL execs claim what makes a great draft.. is filling holes in the team with the middle round picks... 4-6th rounds basically make or break your draft.
  • One thing to remember also is that a second rounder may very well be picked as a starter for a year or two depending on the team in the NFL, more times than not a great 1st rounder has been traded for more picks or players so a team can get the most bang for the buck. In the NBA first rounders are very rarely traded because they are picked to fill a void. Second round picks are used to come in off the bench and for the practice squad, step in for injuries and rest star players. Anyone that makes it to the Pros no matter what sport is a great athelete, they just excell in different aspects. You cant expect a 6'4" 340lb NFL running back to play at the same level as a 7'2" 300lb center at the center position in the NBA, and on the other hand you cant reverse the roles. I also challange anyone who thinks different to tell that straight to the face of a pro athelete! I think that the second and third round picks are just as important as the first.

  • from my experience from playing football and basketball is two different things. IN BASKETBALL, IT DOESNT MATTER IF YOU IS GOOD OR NOT BECUZ U RUN PLAYS AND MOVE AROUND ALL THE TIME AND WHERE U ARE ON THE COURT U CAN GET THE BALL (COULD BE UNDER THE GOAL AND GET BALL AND SCORE) ITS EASY JUST MOVE AROUND AND GET OPEN AND THEN ITS UR TURN TO SHINE!!!

IN FOOTBALL U HAVE TO COMPETE VERY AGGRESSIVELY AND HAVE TO SHOW U KNOW WHAT U DOIN IN FOOTBALL AND RUN THE PLAYS EXACTLY RIGHT IN ORDER IT TO WORK IN OTHER TO BASKETBALL, JUST RUN (REALLY IF U HAVE A PLAY IT DOESNT MATTER, THE ONLY TIME U REALLY RUN A PLAY IS WHEN U MUST HAVE TO A SCORE SITUATION, THATS WHEN THE TALENT AND STARS SHOW OUT OF THE CROWD. AND WHEN U DONT HAVE TO SCORE JUST RUN AROUND AND FIND A OPEN SPOT. SO REALLY WHAT IM TRYIN TO SAY IS TO PLAY FOOTBALL, U MUST BE GOOD AND KNOW EVERY ASPECT OF THE GAME AND TO PLAY THAT POSITION!!!

  • A lot of the reasons given here are ones we discussed too, but it's still odd to think of what a monsterous difference it is...in the NBA second round, you end up with an undersized power forward or a foreign center who may come along in a few years. In the NFL, you can get a skill position player who proved himself at a major program and by all appearances should succeed in the pro's. Even NFL 3rd and 4th round picks hold far more value than an NBA second round pick.

Also, the NFL seems to have better top-heavy drafts too. While the occassional QB may totally flame out, a la Ryan Leaf or Rick Mirer, football has far fewer total top 10 busts than NBA. Look at last year's draft, even by picks 8-10 guys like Rodney White and Kedrick Brown were getting drafted, guys who had major question marks and were gambles at best.
  • Bobstar, the NBDL is not a joke. Well, the season-high attendance of 310 was a joke.

Our team here, the Greenville Groove were the first champs and our main man Ansu Sesay is tearing it up with the Sonics now.

I admit that Groove being the name of a men's team is kind of gay but they could play and Ansu had some nastier dunks than most NBA players could ever dream of.

JErik, did you see anything of mine you liked? I could also throw in some cash for the Garnett. PLMK

  • The NBDL is pretty much a joke. Guys like Sesay (a second round pick by the Mavericks out of Ole Miss a few years ago, if I recall correctly), who are just basically hanging onto a dream. Guys direct from high school rarely if ever even consider going to the NBDL over going pro or spending a year or two in college to get themselves noticed.
  • It is very difficult to even compare one second round NFL pick to another second round NFL draft pick, let alone compare the second round picks to the NBA!
Rest in peace Josh, we'll all miss you
  • nbdl a joke? what about the xfl?
    image

  • The XFL was not at all affiliated with the NFL.
  • who cares it was still a joke. non pro's gotta play somewhere........give them a break.

  • The NBDL is a joke, it's a nice PR move by Stern to say "look, we care about these kids, we're giving them options" then they pay so little that no highly regarded high school player would be caught dead there. they'd rather go to college for a year or two, be big man on campus, and then get drafted. The NBDL has done nothing to solve the problems the NBA and NCAA face with basketball players and deciding how to deal with them.
