My new 1856FE and her sister. Also need opinions on something.

PCGS AU50

Her little sister....PCGS VF25....as seen on and off in my sig line

Both, Snow 3's.

MY registry set.

Should I get them pedigreed?? or no?? I don't plan on upgrading any of them. The 8/7 would be nice to upgrade but I really like the "look" of it even though it's an EF40 and will probably not fool with it. I don't want to upgrade the common ones to MS because they will look out of place with my "keys".

shoot me some opinions!

  • Well, first of all, congratulations on the two 1856's - those are wonderful coins! And congratulations on having one of the top 5 sets. That's certainly something to be proud of.

As for the pedigree question. Riddleme this - why do you want to have your coins pedigreed? I would venture to say that you're proud of them and you'd enjoy seeing your name tied into them in perpetuity - or until someone decides to crack them out, which hopefully will never happen. Anyway, that's a personal question for you to decide. If you want to see them as your babies for ever - go for it and don't worry about what anyone on here thinks - they're your eagles!

Beautiful, both of them. But what does a Snow 3 mean? Presumably it's a variety named after Rick Snow, but just what makes it a Snow 3?

it is nearly certain that the snow3 makes up all or most of the 634 specimens originally distributed to Congress to help promote passage of the pending coinage bill.

they make up about 1/5 of all the '56 FE's.

These are the "mint state" format '56 FE.

these tidbits from Snow's book. GREAT book!

Well, I was impressed with the VF coin with the "carpet" background in the picture, LOL.

But... that AU! Wow! Very impressive, indeed! imageimage

Don't know about the pedigree thing, but I sure think those '56s are pretty. The AU is really nice!

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

the au coin looks right on the money, the vf-35 is a tad weak, isn't it? but who cares, they're '56 FE's!!!

    funny you write that dorkkarl

    the VF25 is photo sealed.

the AU50 is not. Rick would not photo seal it. He stands by his initial assessment of XF45.

Frankly I was surprised it went AU but the VF one is right on the money.
