Restored Date SLQ's?!?!?!?

Is it possible to restore the date on silver coins? I'm watching an auction on ebay for a 1917 T2. The date looks really funky. I emailed the seller to ask if it had been restored and she said "absolutely not"!.

  • Kingmat:

Not worth the hassle - here's a nice 1917S in fine condition for about the same price.

  • Thanks Frank, I saw that one also, but am looking for a T 2. Have you seen any???? Matt
  • I think you're right...the date doesn't look right because the field behind it is bright and shiny, and the higher numerals are dark & toned. How can the lower field wear to become shiny, while the higher numerals stay dark? Unless the field was just carved away to leave behind a date?

Also, why is the width of the rim suddenly interrupted when it meets the date field? Why are the numbers so chunky?
Doesn't look so bad until you compare it to the second 1917 that was posted.
I'd suspect the coin's date has been created, & is not original.
