Washington quarter people - what are cool varieties?

nwcsnwcs Posts: 13,386 ✭✭✭
I got some of coindaughter's raw silver washingtons today and wanted to know what cool varieties (I don't know much about the series) you can share with me and what to look for. Thanks!

Neil

Nope, these are all circulated issues of 1932-1964, but I haven't gone through date/mint combinations. I glanced a 1941, 1962-1964 before I came back to work here.
  • 1934 DD, 1937 DDO, 1942-D DDO, 1943 DDO, 1943-S DDO, 1950-D D over S, 1950-S S over D r some nice coins to look for

Thanks! I'll be sure to look for some of those.
  • Type B's are fun to look for. They are on any P mint from 56-64 and are easy to spot without a loupe. They were made by using a proof reverse die and a business strike obverse die.The easiest way to find them is by looking for a large gap between the E and S in STATES.Also the leaf which points to the R in QUARTER is very sharp.
I dont know how to post a picture but if you email me at achampli@columbus.rr.com I will be glad to send you some pictures.
63's are the easiest to find while 56's and 64's are almost non existent.

Don't forget the type C for 1964 D. Very scarce coin. Has the reverse of a 1965 25c. And the 1952 Superbird on the proof strike. Has a rather distinct s in the center of the bird's chest. Kind of unusual coincidence if you ask me.

John Feigenbaum wrote an excellent book on the series, think David Lawrence published it too. I haven't found any better, typical title "the complete guide to washington quarters"

  • Here are some pics of the reverse types...

rpm's are everywhere, but a 50 D/S and S/D would be a real nice find.
  • If I remember correctly, there's a 1964 D/D/D, and I don't think they were too hard to find, either.
  • Hey, Neil, don't forget to post if you find anything cool. I wanna know! image

You guys are awesome! Thank you for the places to look and especially thank you to Spinynorman for the pics!

I'll let you know if I find any good ones, CD. image Do you know when your father gathered these quarters up? I was surprised by how many good examples were in there.

  • He bought most of his coins in the early '80s... (I know; d'oh!) I'm not sure exactly when he got these.

    What didja find??
  • Funny we should be talking about varieties. I bought a book dedicated to Washington double dies and discovered I have a 1939-S WDDO-1! In NGC MS65. image
