Scratches on PCGS Slabs

All: I just tried this product... that removes the scratches from clear plastics.

I had 5 slabs with scratches on the surface to take away the view of the coin.

I used the Plastic cleaner and I could not believe my eyes. all the scratches were

gone... the name of the product is: MEGUIAR'S MIRROE GLAZE PLASTIC CLEANER

they also make a polish for deeper scratches. I received mine at a local

boat/marine store...

save your 5 bucks..

Have you thought about the possibility of that stuff going through to the coin and causing damage. Remember everything has pores.

I would rather pay $5 and have it reslabed.

    Just a thought.

Rick- that works well. I've also had success with a product made to remove scratches from motorcycle windshields. I forget the name of it, but it also works wonders.
Also- the odds of any product like this 'seeping' through the plastic and onto the coin is much less likely than the chances of you loosing your coins in the mail on their way to PCGS to get reholdered.

I don't know about paying $5 for reholdering unless the scratches are REALLY bad. Most of the fresh submissions I get back already have scratches on the holders. I use 3M plastic polish myself.

The scratches on the holder never bothered me.

That is what the holder is for isn't it?

I used 2 drops of "Brasso" and the stuff works great. I never apply the stuff directly but first onto a cloth.

I did it on a slab 8 YEARS ago and the coin has remained perfect since then in the old slab!!

Thanks... The cleaner is like a glaze.. drys like a wax... I don't think it will make it to the coin...

  • To remove smaller scratches and haze Maguiar's Glass cleaner and Meguiar's "Swirl Remover" #9 works great. Follow the instructions and let the product dry.....then keep buffing. Use alot of elbow grease and a "soft" cotton towel. If in doubt finish with Maguirar's #9...it leaves no residue. Super stuff.

Most creative "solution" I've seen is Crest toothpaste - contains a mild abrasive.

Someone in another thread had recommended a product (auto polish) called Blue Magic that's available at Pep Boys. I jotted it down, and haven't tried it myself, but others seemed to think it was good.

That's it! That's the stuff I recommended above but couldn't remember the name.
  • I use Novus #2 plastic polish. Probably similar to the other polishes mentioned. I think any non-volatile abrasive-type compound should be safe, i.e. wouldn't leach into the slab.

I have never tried Brasso but I would avoid it since my understanding is it's a volatile liquid designed to... remove tarnish from metal! Doesn't sound like a good mix with coins.

Re-slabbing probably won't do any good as the plastic is all scratched up before slabbing, imho.

Scratches on the holder are even more annoying if you're trying to photograph it. On coins I post on my web site I use a bit of crest toothpaste to remove scratches. It makes the holder smell minty fresh too! image
