the 1991 half eagle, gold coin, with only 24,000 ever made, is one of the lowest mintage coins. what do you think of it as a low mintage inverstment coin or collector coin?

I don't. I think of it as a bullion coin. It is like low mintage commem coins.

100 years from now collectors will be paying ridiculous sums of money for them. Unfortunately, you'll be dead image

Mintage of 24,000 but as long as 23,999 or less collectors care or want this one (for the "date") it'll remain common.

  • This is a gold coin that has been packaged very well by the mint. The great majority of these coins will never be abused; they will sit quietly in their packages and remain in high grade. This means that a high grade piece will never be a conditional rarity. Out of the 24,000 coins maybe 1000 will be cracked out of their packages and abused in a manner which will affect the grade of the coin leaving 23,000 high grade examples remaining.

Allow me to show the Q David Bowers universal rarity index or URS scale:

    URS-0......None known
    URS-1......1 known.........................unique
    URS-2......2 known.........................extreemely rare
    URS-3......3 or 4.............................extreemely rare
    URS-4......5 to 8.............................extreemely rare
    URS-5......9 to 16...........................very rare
    URS-6......17 to 32.........................very rare
    URS-7......33 to 64.........................rare
    URS-8......65 to 124.......................rare
    URS-9......125 to 249.....................rare
    URS-10....250 to 499.....................extreemely scarce
    URS-11....500 to 999.....................extreemely scarce
    URS-12....1,000 to 1,999...............scarce
    URS-13....2,000 to 3,999...............scarce
    URS-14....4,000 to 7,999...............semi-scarce
    URS-15....8,000 to 15,999.............semi-scarce
    URS-16....16,000 to 31,999...........common
    URS-17....32,000 to 64,999...........common
    URS-18....65,000 to 124,999.........common
    URS-19....125,000 to 249,999.......very common

This coin is indeed common in high grade, a URS-16 if you may. If you like the coin buy it. However, in the long run it probably will only increase in value proportionally to the cost of bullion.

I just spent my 1928-P Peace dollar at McDonalds, extremely common piece of bullion image
