New member here.

Hi my name is Mike and I am new to the boards.
I am 22 and getting back into the hobby after being out of it for a few years. I Was involved when I was between 10 and 15.
I used to collect with my grandfather.
My grandfathers recent passing has gotten me back into the hobby as I have acquired his collection I get to pick out what I want and my grandmother wants me to sell the rest.
My main interests are Morgan dollars, Walking liberty half dollars, franklyn halves, and mint errors/variations.
I live in NJ and would like to get more seriously involved in the hobby.

Welcome. This is the place to be to learn all about coins.Lots of super knowledgable folks here.

If you would like to discuss things privately to various members,go to your `profile` and add that option,PMs(private messages).

Tell Grandma you gotta find out more about all the coins before you can sell any.
Heck,If they were willed to you, then, hey,They,re yours.Personally I,d say the decision to sell or not is mine.
IF they had been willed to me.Anyway,I dont want to get into anyones family matters,as I,d expect others to respect mine to.Just saying...

    lol,forget that last paragraph..

  • Cam40 the coins were not willed to me. My grandmother is just kind enough to let me have the ones I want and half the money from the ones I sell. I am kind of growing attatched to them as I look through them though kinda makes me remember looking at them with my grandfather.

LucyBop yes I have 2 Proof Franklins right now. I have the complete set in AU though.
    I have a 62 in prf68
I also have an ungraded 57 in a set with quarter dime nickel and penny all proofs.
For some reason my personal coins never liked to tone heavily. My franklins just have a touch of toning.

All the marks on the 57 are on the case. The coin has no marks on it.

  • Does anyone have any experience on scanning coins with an epson scanner more speciffic a 1650 photo?
I cant seem to show any luster on my morgan scanns.
They all come out looking flat grey or silver with no luster.
    example is my
    1885 CC Morgan
    back of 1885CC morgan
in person it appears to almost have a mirror finish with a light cameo face. But the scan doesnt show that with much precision at all.

    Welcome Mike,

There are quite a good number of coin shows in New Jersey. You might want to check out Coin World for dates and places. I try and get to some of them as my girlfriend lives in NJ.

That's what I have and I haven't done any better either. I think the best pix come from the digital cameras. Russ....give him a hand with that, would you?

BTW. Glad to meet you Mike.

    Welcome, Mike.

My Agfa scanner washes out color in my scans, too. I now use a Fuji Finepix 2600 and natural light to show how the coins actually look.

Welcome Mike. I collect Morgans also. & you are correct, scanners do not capture luster or color correctly. Just a property of the light source the scanner uses. Scanners do capture detail well though.

    You were asking Vams.
    Here a link for those.vamlink

Says ,no VAM for a `85CC,but the `92S could be a RPD(repunched date)Look for doubling in the date.

Welcome, you have come to the right place
Need something designed and 3D printed?
  • Since I am not sure what I am looking at (doubling in the date) here is a closeup scan of the date on the 92S
    92S date

Thankyou and you definitely seem like a great group of people. Makes me glad I found the board.
  • Is there any doubling in the date? Can someone post a link to a double date morgan please.
