Are there any blank gold planchets known to exist?

Just curious. May have to track down Fred Weinberg or somebody to find out more...

  • I've never heard of any...you'd think the US Mint would have a tighter
inspection on gold coins, thus lessening the chance for one to get out.

When you refer to blank gold planchets, do you mean the old gold coins or the modern ones?

I sold one about two years ago. ANACS (circa 1985) felt it was a real US $5 blank planchet. The new owner sent it in to NGC who felt it was not a US coin, but a foreign coin. The ANAAB couldn't tell what it was. I don't know what happened to the coin after since the new owner became insane.
