High Grade Lincoln Cents from the 1970's

Why are these so hard to make or find? I went to a coin shop today, looked at over 100 mint sets in the 70's looking for High Grade Lincolns. Not one graded over MS-64. I looked at alot of the Registry Sets(1909 to current) looks like everyone is having the same problem! The 1970's suck!

Outside of a couple of dates, the sixties are as bad if not worse.

I agree, same with the early 80's.

    Why is this?

  • BU Rolls are not that different. Most coins are quite baggy but the rolls are still cheap so I can't see paying a huge price for them just yet.
  • Hard at work as usual I see. I had to work my tail off today and didn't have time to think about coins. image

I agree. Same with the fifties! You have to go back to the thirties and fourties to find MS67s in large numbers.

The 72-D is the toughest though there are several in the 70's which are very elusive.
To complicate matters some of these dates are beginning to corrode in mint set packs.

I've started to send in nice Lincolns from the 1970's after seeing
what some individuals were bidding for PCGS MS-67RD examples.
I think the 1972-S & 1973-S issues will continue to be elusive in
this grade due to their unusual drab luster. I recently sent in five
nice full red 73-S cents hoping for the MS-66RD grade. All five
came back as MS-65RD. I thought these coins were mark-free,
fully-struck, and bright. Perhaps, they didn't possess enough
flash or "zip" to grade higher. They are much nicer than the usual
    specimen.

The low-pop MS-67RD coins do bring high prices from avid collectors.
    Just witness E-Bay auctions.
