I bought a 1898-S Morgan from him back in February. There was no pix but the listing read, " AU-55. aneat white coin that is well struck with lots of original luster.dipped long ago, now retoning." It should have read "was AU until we used a brillo pad on it." Oldroman needs a new pair of glasses! This poor thing was scratched all too he!!. I was real green then and just kept it.
Yep. The so-called prooflike trade dollar had been cleaned and had a big scratch across it. It originally came in an ACG MS-62 DMPL slab, but I saw the same coin being sold by someone else as "MS details, scratched; Net AU-50" (or was it EF?) later in an ANACS slab.
I purchased a raw Barber quarter off of them on Ebay many months ago. They graded the coin as AU55. When I submitted to PCGS, they took exception and graded it AU53.
I was not surprised or unhappy. Overall it was a nice transaction.
ok, this is 1 case where i have to cut the dealer a break. i've known sal fusco for years, he's an extremely fair-minded & hardworking gentleman who will make a transaction right if it doesn't work out. i would not hesitate to recommend them (his daugther helps run the business) in that regard. i've probably bought at least 25 coins from them over the years (he used to do mail-sale at one time). some of my best deals have been from sal.
however, quite frankly, the old fella has gotten on in years, & his eyesight literally ain't what it used to be. he doesn't necessarily overgrade intentionally, but is prone to missing "problems" (cleaning, dipping ,etc) that he didn't used to. you'll seem him walking the floor at a lot of shows, white hair, black glasses, a "european" look to him, always nicely dressed & pulling his big cart of coins behind him. he's got all his marbles, & remembers your name after you meet him just once.
bottom line: i would recommend him, because again, i have never had a problem w/ him righting a wrong, & that type of relationship is not common these days.
I see his listings all the time. He sells a lot of junk. I bought my only raw DMPL eBay Morgan from him. It was a $30 coin he advertised as MS60 DMPL but really would probably grade 60-63 PL at PCGS. It was what I expected to get so I didn't have a problem with it.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
I eMailed and asked if he had larger scans of this coin. His response was that the photos were as large as he could make them without sacrificing clarity. Huh?
I've bought some coins from this seller. I have never had a problem. I have heard a lot of different comments concerning this seller. Good and bad. The one coin I purchased that I wanted to return, was a no problem, hassle free transaction. I know he sells some ACG stuff, on a regular basis, but like everything else out there, there is some sifting to be done.
Remember Russ, not everyone is totally computer literate. I'm lucky I can get my machine to turn on!!
Bought a slabbed PCGS Morgan from him that they tried to be cheap on shipping and sent in an envelope, well, those go through the rollers at the PO and you know it came here in three pieces of course. Easy to return, but I really wanted the coin. Next purchase was on an 1821 large cent, received it and it was incredibly porous, no mention whatsoever in the auction, and took a big loss when I sold it.
I agree with what BigD5 said basically. He has probably tried "Sizing" the scan that he has, and it becomes very pixelated. What he doesn't know how to do probably is scan at a higher resolution. At least that's what I think!
