proof and mint set collectors, please read!

How important are photos for auctions for proof and mint sets? We're thinking about ways to streamline, but if pix are important, we will start the scanning!

    Thanks for asking!

I've returned more proof sets to sellers than anything else, because of toning or other problems with individual coins that were not mentioned in the descriptions. I've taken to emailing all sellers now specifically asking about the condition/appearance of the coins, because proof set and mint set photos are so inadequate.

If you can put up a photo expandable enough to reveal color and detail, I think it would save you a lot of trouble, and boost your bids.

I'd put up a stock photo and say so in the auction. People like photos, even if they aren't of the coin they are going to get.

I will not purchase a proof or mint set unless it's the actual picture and it's a good close up of the set. Scans aren't as good since they tend to distort some of the plastic and cause funky rainbow effects.

Good close up/expandable shots and accurate descriptions will great increase sales.

Got any really nice 73,74 or 75s available?

I won't purchase an opened set unless there is a scan of both the front and back. Even when there is, I always eMail the seller and specifically ask if it's the actual set, or a stock photo. If no answer or stock photo, I don't bid.

BUT, I should note that I'm not a set collector. There's only one coin in the set that I'm after.

  • Thanks, folks! Looks like we'll need to get out the digital camera. I didn't mean for this thread to be a sales pitch. We were just thinking about getting these going...

    Thanks for your opinions!

Even without photos, it might be worth your time to post stuff you have for sale on the buy/sell/trade board here FIRST. You'll save on eBay fees, and probably will find people here looking for more/similar items as well.

With that in mind, if you have any 1964 sets with the accented hair kennedy, forget Russ, sell em to ME imageimage

To me a picture can say more than any words a seller can provide. A good, big, sharp picture of the coin in question to me is the biggest selling feature. Give me some facts about the coin as far as condition and noticeable features and I'm good image

  • Thanks again for your input, everyone. If you have specifics that you are interested in, PM me. I may not be able to answer completely because I have an inventory list but not the coins. It may be a while before we get ready to sell them. It is a very slow process!

Again, I'd like to thank you all again. My family thanks you, too. You are helping make this big task a bit easier!
