that'd be my guess.

I listed items before and done this because I knew I could get better pictures before they were encapsulated. I just saved the before pics on disc and used them when the coin came back.

I think the fine details have been corroded off.

My dealings with oldroman didn't inspire any confidence in them.

dudes, its a CHAIN CENT.

that is not even close to being a piece of crap, it has a solid date, & credible detail. i would net-grade as g-6, and it should be valued around $2800.

note that the chain is always strong on the reverse, & it's silly (redundant) for sellers to say "strong reverse". duh

it's a chain cent for petes sake!!! you buy it even if it's been stretched out in the shape of a spoon!!! (1 of them has been - kinduva legendary "crappy" coin)

you want one that has "no" problems? double retail, baby, double retail, & i am NOT exaggerating.

Dorkkarl, I think you are being very generous. I wouldn't net grade that any higher than an AG-3 coin.

I like it. For some reason that smooth porosity doesn't bother me on these really super, older coppers. I'd rather have this one then one that is smooth but with way less detail.
Neat coin and should sell for $2,200.00+.

hey condor101, a differing opinion is always a good thing! i'm guessing at retail grade, are you maybe suggesting eac grade? i probably wouldn't disagree w/ ag-3/3+ eac.

commercial ag-3 is probably about $1000, but that coin seems worth much more than that. i've seen ugly slicks w/ basically no obv bring 1K at auction.

regrettably, i don't have a chain cent, but i've had a couple over the years, never better than commercial VG at best. but i love those coins, in just about any grade.

would appreciate your further comments, condor. are you a eac member?

Yes that was an EAC grade. And yes I am an EACer, I've been a member since 1982 #1947.

I don't have a chain cent yet either. I'm hoping to get lucky next week. I just got a catalog in the mail from England and in among all the ancients, mideval, and hammered lots are four lots of US coins and one of them is a very low grade chain that they have estimated at one hundred pounds. (I need to track down their last catalog and see how accurate they are with their estimates compared to what the hammer price actually is.) It's a long shot but sometimes they pay off. Sometimes I just get lucky too, like the auction where I got my 93 wreath. I was at a sale and everyone was chasing the silver lots and the silver dollars. Everything else was going cheap. I picked up the bargin of the auction, a problem free 93 wreath in G-4 for $150.

I would have graded it at AG myself but I've read the grading services are more lenient on earlier coins and those that are known to have been of consistently poor stike quality. Maybe that's way they rated it a Fine 12. An 1850 large cent in this condition wouldn't grade F12. Can anyone explain the grading differences between these coins and later large cents?
