I mean no disrespect but there is no way that coin is a $2000+ tone monster. It has a nice rainbow on the obverse (in fairly common colors) and basic album type toning on the reverse. It's a nice combination but IMO (and mine only) it's a less than $2,000 coin. Maybe I should not say anything but it's an awful lot of money.

    Hi,

I know I am new to these boards so maybe I am out of line here but I will take a chance. I don't know if the policy here is to post an unsolicitated comment as to what someone paid for a coin, but to "offer" a public disagreement as to what a coin is worth without the owner of the coin asking for that type of response is not cool, imo.

I, for one, would love to continue to see pics of what people find and/or purchase, and to post something that I purchased and deem it neat for other coin lovers to see, and a lesser desire to know what people purchased them for. If unsolicitated public rebuttals commenting on a price of a piece is the norm for this board, I don't think I will be posting anymore pics of my finds in the future. I am sure I am not the only one that feels this way.

No offense is meant!! These are just my thoughts.

  • loki, i suppose u have a point but i can see that James is only telling Bareny his opinion

    << <i>I mean no disrespect but... >>

    << <i>IMO (and mine only) >>

i also think that 2000 bucks is a little steap though i cant see the coin in person so it is hard to judge. i dont think that telling him the price is very respectful though, 500 dollar coin, the last thing he wants to hear is that some thinks thier coin is over priced by 3/4ths. and i think that this is more than a 500 dollar coin by a long shot.

    Loki:

Most people here (I think) post recent purchases (and prices) to essentially ask "how they did." How in the world are we ever going to learn anything if we all just say "great find, great deal." If the purpose of the Forum is to gather compliments only, then the value is greatly reduced. The times I have asked opinions on my stuff was exactly that. I wanted to learn whether others thought I spent too much or bought a bad coin. THIS is the coin market in a micro sense so if these guys and gals think you paid too much, then you probably did. In any event, price and value are issues in coin collecting and I am assuming that Barney mentioned his purchase price to gather comments on the value of what he bought. The coin is beautiful but it's debatable if the price was too high.

It's not offensive to me at least if someone says you paid too much or that's funky toning. That's the sort of thing I want to know.

Loki, I have a solution for you, at least, based on your comments. You can still post images for feedback about the coin itself and simply not mention what you paid.

OK understood. Well for what it's worth, I for one would appreciate any honest critique as to my purchases including price if it is mentioned. I just hope Barney or anyone else feels the same way if they decide to "step up to the plate" with their finds. I'd much prefer to learn something about my deals, good or bad, but especially bad, while I am new to the field, rather than after I subject myself to many scrupilous deals. Glad I found this place before I lost my shirt, lol! image

  • Beauty and value are in the eyes of the beholder. I believe that all are free to respond here-within reason, of course. I would not have posted
the coin and its cost if I were fearful of the responses. I think this is a good learning lesson for all. It was, of course, my money, and I did
not buy the coin to realize a quick profit. As I stated, I could have received a full refund on the coin, but I chose to keep it. It pleased me and
    that what matters.

If you feel I paid too much, fine. There are many coins that might have been a better value than what I have, but someone might agree with
me and pay the price that the dealer was asking. I was looking for a gorgeous toner and that's what I have.

Thanks to all who responded, including the many skeptical people.

I think you're a wise man and you hit the nail right on the head - it's your money, and you liked the coin - nuff said.

I can't say that I would have done the same, but I'm sure all of us at one point or another have indulged our senses buying something that perhaps more "logical" minds would deem extravagant or outrageous. Let's face it, sometimes we just have to indulge ourselves. So in the spirit of indulgence, I salute you Barn. image

It's pretty on the obv. I like the way the blue gray line goes around the face seperating the purple part from the white part. That is some cool purple. Kinda like a white face blonde hair & a purple hat. Unusual & attractive to me. The rev color does not excite me any but I like the textile at the top where it was against the bag. All in all it's pretty cool! image As a Morgan collector I like it. Cost too much.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • Glad you liked it, Dog. The scan did not reflect the full beauty of the reverse. It is full of pastel colors that look bland and dark on the scan. I'm sending the coin to Anaconda Adrian who will take a good digital pic. I will post the pic as soon as it is ready.

And yeah, it was expensive. But as an experienced Morgan collector you know how much other toners are going for these days, and this one simply turned me on after looking at perhaps a hundred such coins.

    Thanks,
    Barn

I still don't know what the story is here. But it doesn't matter. From what I understand you bought a nice colorful morgan and paid what it is worth to you. And thats all that matters. I give my congrats Barney.
