Green backing on state quarter

Has anyone seen the back of a state quarter turn a tint of green and lose its silver luster? This is on a circulated Pennsylvania state quarter. It only shows the changes on the reverse of the quarter. Could this be somehow made of the wrong material, or just environment?

Thanks for any help.

  • Sounds like environment, perhaps. Some sort of chemical reaction to the copper in the copper nickel composition will make it turn green. The reverse must have come into contact with something at some point that set off the reaction. That would be my guess. image

Sounds like a description of a coin that rolled under a washing machine at the laundrymat and retrieved
    months later.
Not an ideal storage place for yer raw coins.image
