Lincoln Population Changes: 8/22 to 9/30

For the curious, change in Lincoln pops (MS 65 and higher, red only) for the last 39 days are shown below.

A few items of note: For those who think it is hard to make a 67RD these days in the short set (34-58), it looks like only 15 were added to the pops in this period. Not sure if that is few or a lot but it doesn't sound like very many to me. Interesting to note a few negatives (down grades?, returned certs from crack outs?). Anyway, here's the data, so you can form your own conclusions. A total column at the right and total and subtotal rows at the bottom help highlight where the changes occured.

Whoa, that doesn't look very pretty. I had a nice table that I cut and pasted into the message but it looks like formatting was lost. If anyone can advise how to copy info from Excel into a message and retain formatting, let me know and I'll clean up the chart.

Thanks for the info, Wayne. You are right ... a 67 RD is a chore. I sent in a couple of '1930s I felt good about for 67 RD and, you guessed it, 66 RDs!

You'll have to take a screen capture of the Excel spreadsheet and upload it as a photo. That's the only way. There is no real formatting here.

And I'll bet the big increase in the 1909's is largely due to the "free grading" promotion PCGS was running for collectors' club members.

    OK,

In the middle of trying to improve the formatting last night, my DSL went dead. I waited until this morning to see if it would come back on its own. It didn't. I called tech support and apparently I lost it due to my recent decision to change suppliers. I had planned to keep the old DSL ISP until the new one was up and running. However, the new one advised my local telephone company of the change and the local Bell switched the provisioning (whatever that means) from the old ISP to the new ISP even though I didn't have the new ISP in place yet. Anyway, this afternoon, I got hooked up with the new ISP and am back on line.

I uploaded a webpage with the information formatted a little easier to read (hopefully).

    Link

Hopefully, that is a bit easier to read.

    Interesting info, Wayne. Thanks.

Lookit all the 66s, from people trying to get those 67s!
  • Wow, 3 1925 in 67 just vanished. I was going to send in another order with some 67's, yeah right with those odds. You can see the dealer bulk submissions. AA roll of 1935's and 5 67RDs. Its a date that comes nice so no surprise. The 10-S downgrade has got to hurt.

Wayne - I take it you got your 68's on a bulk submission(s). When was this? How have you been doing recently? I have a gorgeous 34-D from an Original roll that is, IMO a 67 but I am leary of sending it in. I also have a 35-S from the same hoard that is PQ66. Would you hold on for now?

I have 3 shoo in 67's from 1935, what is it about a 68 that gets the grade? Is it the context? By this I mean does the grader need to look through an entire roll of great coins and at the end the standout shows and therefore gets a 68? Can you get a 68 with just one coin or do they have to be with a bunch of others?
  • wayneherndonwayneherndon Posts: 2,346 ✭✭✭
    clackamas,

Unfortunately (for my wallet), I had to buy all my 68s. I used to do a lot of bulk submissions. My last one was about 6 months ago with nearly 500 coins. I had about a dozen 67s. After that, I have not sent them much copper.

    WH,

Thanks for the spreadsheet work; it really helps in planning for people like me who are still in the early stages of building a registry quality Lincoln set.

    clackamas,

Any chance that you would make me an offer on your MS67RD raw 34-D? Would you be willing to part with it at a PQ 66 price with the understanding that I would make you whole if (when) I got it into a 67 holder at some later date? I'll PM you about it soon...

  • Wayne, That's got to hurt on only a dozen 67's out of 500. I am sure you picked out the <65 coins out of the group as well. I am keeping some choice rolls in hiding for now. I did however send in the finest of the rolls to get a feel for how things are going right now. I can always crack them at a latter date. The new graders are going to have to get real at some point. I have noticed that over the last week when printing out submission forms that the numbers have not been going up that fast.

I sent in a 34-D that really should be in a 67 holder and a 35-S that IMO is a PQ 66RD but I thought I would give it a shot since its better than my current 35-S's. I also sent in my gimme 67 35's but put them at the end of the order so as not to spoil the graders, like it really matters. I honestly don't care if the 34-D comes back a 66RD since its going into my registry set and will replace my current 66RD regardless of the grade. I will however go ballistic if it comes back 65 for any reason.

I went through my old holder Lincoln's and my green labels tonight and have concluded that there has been a definitive shift in PCGS Lincoln grading since May of this year. I am a buyer right now of PQ 66RD's graded in the last 6 months. Someday they will get the bump.

    clackamas,

Let us know how they come back. I'm not sending much copper until they lighten up a bit. I agree with you on the 66s of late--they are the ones to buy up.

    Wayne,

Thanks for the information. It surprises me that a series as popular as Lincolns had so few coins graded for that period.

There are still rolls out there. I know, because I've got over 50 wheat cent rolls from 1935-58 that I bought mostly in the late '60's-late '70s when they were dirt cheap. A lot of them are cherry, but I hate to break them up by picking out the 66's and 67's. I suppose I'll have to someday; I definitely won't sell them at the current roll prices. I also have 2 boxes of raw common 1909-1933 Lincolns that contain a lot of MS65RD or better coins. They originally cost $3 - $15 per coin. When I retire (or if prices really begin to soar), I'll get around to having them slabbed, but it doesn't seem that now is a good time to try to get high grades. I'll bet there are a lot of other collectors who are sitting on mini-hoards. Come on, you old timers, fess up. It used to be that practically every collector started off with Lincolns.

Cocoinut.......or should I say Rip Van Winkle

Are you aware of what the value of ms66red and ms 67 Red lincolns are bringing ? Are you being funny ?

Wayne - Convince this guy to send you his coins for grading or have him send the coins in himself

Even David Hall calls Lincoln Cents nuclear !!!!!!

  • From 1910-29 there are not that many rolls still intact. If you have "S" or "D" mints from the teens or twenties, that are RD and cherry, then NOW is the time to get them in a holder and consider selling. Stewart is correct and some dates are going for crazy money. The more common dates (Post 35) are in abundance but MS67 anything will bring decent money and Pre 1930's go for quite a bit in even 66RD.

I wonder if David Hall is simply trying to sell Lincolns to Saddam Hussein?

Gerry - With some of the prices I've been hearing.......I think George Bush would prevent David Hall from selling Lincolns to Saddam Hussein.

If you want to collect gem mint state Lincolns, then you can't think if you can or can not afford them........or they will disappear

    Stewart,

I'm not totally oblivious regarding the Lincoln cent market (just slightly image). With the exception of the 1935-S and the 1949-1955 Philadelphia coins, the 1935-58 cents just aren't worth slabbing in MS66RD, IMO. Some of my rolls undoubtedly contain MS67's, but I've seen so few slabbed 67's that I'm not sure I can determine which ones might possibly make the grade. I'm not planning to assemble a PCGS set of Lincolns (yet), but I may have to buy some PCGS 66's and 67's just so I can have a grading set for comparison with my raw coins.

My pre-1935 raw singles run the gamut from 63RB to 66RD, with most of them likely to grade as MS64/65RD. The mintmarked issues and all others in MS65 or better would be worth having slabbed, but it's expensive to slab that many coins, and I don't intend to sell in the near future. Most have been stored in Kointains or other inert plastic holders for at least 20 years, and look as good as when purchased.

    LincolnSence,

I believe that Lincolns are generally reasonably priced - until you get to the highest grades for a given date. It's the old supply and demand story: everyone wants the highest grades they can afford, and the lower grade coins go begging. You should have no trouble finding raw MS64/65 coins after 1933 that are affordable, and have lots of eye appeal. Even non-collectors are sometimes surprised to learn that an uncirculated "penny" from 50-60 years ago can be bought for a couple of dollars.
