Error people, questions about rotated dies.

I'm looking at an 1864 two cent piece, not a high grade - about EF40 or so - but it has a 180 degree rotated die. What should the premium be on these? Or, is there even a premium? Also, does PCGS attribute rotated dies? Thanks.

Rotation is common on the 2¢ so there's not much prem for it. Not sure about PCGS's designation.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • There is one variety of 1864 two cent piece that always comes with a 180 degree rotation. It is a very common variety and carries no premium.

I know NGC will attribute "rotated dies" on their holders if requested. I've had a couple like that. I wouldn't pay a premium for the rotated dies on two cent pieces, but they are interesting. As stated, common though. I have Frank Leone's attribution book for the 1864 pieces, shoot me a PM if you would like to try and attribute your coin.

  • Dog97 is correct, the 64 two cent piece is in a tight battle with the 1807 large cent as being the most common US coin available with rotated dies (with the 07 large cent being much tougher to find with perfect die alignment then it is with rotated dies). 180° rotation on the 64 two cent piece is also very common and can be found in all grades with a fairly large number available in MS. It is also available with rotation of all different degrees and condition. The most common Kennedy with rotated dies is the 1988 with the majority rotated 180° (it is also one of the most common modern coins with rotated dies) and you usually can pick them up for under $100 in MS64-65. There are also a few 1973-S and 1984-S proof pieces floating around with dies rotated 180° with the 84-S coming rotated both 90° & 180°. I currently own a 1967 MS63 rotated 175° , 1973-S PR63 & 1984-S PR64 both rotated 180° and a 1988 MS65 also rotated 180°. In my signature is a web site devoted to rotated dies http://www.rotateddies.com/.
