I don't know how similiar it is to my scanjet 4200 but I have a drop down menu with settings.
I use 100 dpi (more dpi makes a bigger pict, not better pict)
    Scan with color.
Check box for take time to rescan for better resolution.
Size setting of 300% for Morgans. 200% if I scan the whole slab.
    Crop out all the background.
Prop the end of slab or 2x2 on a pencil.
If your scanner has a "scan for email feature" use it.
And you will get this kind of pict with a 37 KB file size that quickly uploads & downloads.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • thanks dog, i'll try that
  • THANKS SO MUCH! I finally got the scans to upload to ebay using your settings. I have sold stuff on ebay but always used a digital camera. The pics just popped in with that. The scanner was a little different.

Hey cool. Bout time I started earning my keep around here.

  • I don't know if you have silver proofs, but here are the settings I use for my proof coins to get the kind of pic attached below.

    Lighten/Darken
    -Highlights 230
    -Midtones 3.00
    -Shadows 10
    Sharpen:Low
Resolution:300 (I later reduce to 81% of size in MS Paint)
Place slab in the center of the scanner to eliminate reflections in the field of the coin (try putting the coin in one of the corners of the scanner bed to see what I am talking about)

    hope that helps,
    Dan
  • Hey Dog-Do you prop up both ends of the slab so that the slab is still parallel to scanner bed or only one end to slant the slab?
    Dan
  • thanks rover, it will take a little practice to get this thing figured out. I posted one coin to ebay and i think i could get a better pic, but i think its good enough for right now.
  • presleyh-post a link to the auction, I would like to see it.
    Dan
  • I dont know how to do links yet. auction number is 1384813224. If you have any suggestions for improving the scan let me know. thanks

Just 1 end so it's at a little angle. Sometimes it needs to be a little higher or lower than a pencil and you can use pennies instead. Sometimes it needs one side or the other propped up. Every coin scans different. One thing I found out is that if you try to save time by putting 9 or 10 coins on the bed you get lots of glare instead of scanning them 1 at a time.

  • presleyh-beautiful scan! That's your first?? wow. The only suggestion I would make is that if you can host your own pics you won't be restrained by iPic's size.
Bigger is better, especially on older coins.

    Dan
  • I do host my pics. Like i said i usually use a digital camera for big items. No problem they just pop into ebay. My problem with the scanner was my picture size was too big to transmit in a reasonable amount of time. The file was too big. using Dogs suggestions, the pics loaded in less than 45 seconds. The picture hosting people started charging for their service a year ago so i dropped out.
