Recommendation on a book on Early Commemorative Halfs

Commem's were plentiful at Long Beach, lots of ms66-67 high end GEMS..... What wonderful coins these are and each one has a tale to tell! Can anyone point Lucy towards a must have book concerning these wonderful creations of the US Mint.....

  • Hi Lucy,

I reccomend the The Silver & Gold Commemorative Coins by Swiatek and Breen.

    Hope this helps,

    Rusty.
  • i would second that - good reference book but getting dated.

    Q. David Bowers also wrote a nice one called Commemorative Coins of the US - Complete Encycolpedia. Mine ends in about 1991, I don't know if he has later revisions or not.

Anthony Swiatek also has a paperback entitled Commemorative Coins of the United States, which is available on Amazon for $ 21.95. It provides an overview of coin history and market/population information.

I have both books and they are great. Two other older books I have read are:
"United States Commemorative Coinage" (1975) - Arlie Slabaugh
"An Illustrated History Of U.S. Commemorative Coinage" (1967) - Don Taxay
