How about a game of guess the grade? Revealed

Here is a nicely toned 1963 Washington Quarter just back from PCGS. Anyone want to put forth their guess on the grade assigned by them? The scan isn't the greatest ( got to get a digital camera) but I think it is sufficient.

  • Not being a Washington expert, I'm going to go out on a limb... (bears do that on occasion.)

Lots of hair detail. Fair eagle breast feathers, good motto, details in the eagle's branch: I'll guess MS65

    66.
    I collect circulated U.S. silver
  • I think MS65. The toning I think would've bumped it up from a MS64.image

  • How does MS62 grab ya. I guess from this submission plus a couple others just back, they suddenly have turned off the faucet...or I can't grade anymore image

clevegreg- it's hard to tell from your picture but if pcgs gave it a 62 there must be something pretty obvious when viewed in person if three graders looked at it and graded it like that I would think. Please take no personel offense to my comments it's just that ms62's seem to have problems so I wonder what they saw in your coin. mike
  • No offense taken, I was actually hoping someone would spot something obvious. I was thinking 65 with a shot at 66 with the nice toning, I could have agreed with a 64, but I think a 62 is way off. I will look at it even better this weekend just to see what I missed. I usually find these kind of things to be a learning experience.

Maybe it was graded by someone who wasn't going to get to play at Long Beach this weekend image

Greg -- after you have had a chance to review it, please post some follow-up comments. Based purely on the scan, I would have agreed with your initial assessment.

If it really is MS62, One would have to assume that the lustre is somewhat impaired, there are marks that don't show up in the scan, and perhaps in addition, they weren't crazy about the toning (which looks nice enough in the scan).

I was going to take a shot at 63, with the caveat that the image is a little blury and the toning is nice, but too dark to assess the surfaces. I suspect that a '63 may be a tad baggy, but considering it's "newness" as far as the series goes, it is expected to be well struck and unmarred. I've been grabbing up some slabbed silver washingtons, and I must admit, that the services are a bit tougher on them then I expected. Too many struck to get up around 68, but the very nice ones are probably already in collections and the remainder are not/have not been handled well. Or so it seems. It also seems, they are tougher on the silver washingtons, than the clad. Let's see, silver is softer and prone to marks, clad is harder and prone to less than spectacular strikes; go figure. image
