Local coin shop burned up today

A little coin shop down the street went up in flames today. I know of 1 less MS 3 cent silver and a 16-D merc not to mention some decent indians and CC morgans. I wonder how many coins in the pops have gone this way and will never be seen again.

Look for a bunch of "blow torch" specials coming your way on eBay soon. . .

  • That is a shame. Hopefully the owner has insurance.

Sorry to hear this. Where was the shop located?
  • It was "American coin and Collectibles" on Cornell Road in Portland, OR.

Hopefully they will be able to salvage as much as possible. Where you a frequent customer there?
  • I hate to hear that. I just discovered I had a little mom and pop shop not to far from me. Went in there today, he did not really have anything I was interested in, but he played show and tell with me and told me all kinds of great tales of thirty years in the biz.
Encounters with walter Breen, Pittman, etc. He told me all about how he gets the young kids started in numismatics.
Then, when I was ready to leave, he pulled out the pride and joy of his private collection for me to take a look at. An 1877 complete, original, matched proof set that he has owned since the sixties. They were not in slabs, just flips, but it looked to me like they were all gem plus and above. What a treat.
There are not enough small local shops anymore, I hate to see another go.
  • I wish that the mom and pop shops would make a return. I don't know about the financial viability they have, but from a collector's point of view, they're lots of fun. Going to a trusted local shop on a weekend is like adventuring to a place with treasures and discoveries to make.

Sorry this place burned down. I hope all works out for him/her/them.

I wonder if he will be running a "fire sale" on toned coins? image

  • Look for "mom & pop" coin shops to be a thing of the past.

Two locals near me closed in just the last month. One retired and sold his inventory and the other decided to deal solely via the internet and not pay for overhead [rent, utilities, etc.].

Personally I think it is a big mistake. I no longer buy sight unseen unless I know the dealer real real well. Otherwise it is a waste of my time and his when coins are returned. So that leaves the shows. Then again how many shows are there locally per year if you live in the boonies?

It may be a little too early to write off small coin shops as a viable economic activity.
There are huge numbers of new collectors and if only a small percentage grow and
pursue their collections there is some possibility that their buying would support even
more shops than currently exist. There are many new start up coin sellers in this area,
though he bulk are small and sell primarily on the net or at flea markets. Things usually
have a way of happening which surprises everybody.

It's a shame the owner didn't have insurance, but I'm told that's not uncommon with the mom-and-pop shops. It must be very expensive. Hopefully his inventory is salvageable.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Look for that "Fire Toned" 16D in my Merc Set. image No not really as I know this Shop owner from other dealings when he worked for another Coin Shop before opening his own a little over a year ago. Rough to see a Newer shop go away so soon. Really think he will start up again though.

There is a nice mom and pops coin store in downtown Marietta Ga...........Robinsons Coins, they've been around since the early 60s....real nice people, and willing to bargain for their repeat customers. They sell mostly circ stuff, but do have a nice selection of higher end coins.........they don't deal in slabs, though.
