Regrades at PCGS

I was wondering what other people's experiences are with using the regrade service at PCGS?

I recently sent in 12 coins for regrade and only 2 upgraded. The 12 coins were a mixture of borderline upgrades, no doubt about it upgrades, and a couple of wishful thinking upgrades.

While I didn't expect all 12 to upgrade, I did expect more than 2. AND the two most insanely undergraded coins didn't upgrade. image These were coins that were severely undergraded according to everyone who saw them.

While I personally strongly prefer to crack out coins that I want regraded, I did this as kind of a test. I was wondering if others have had the same experience? I plan on cracking a few of these out and trying them raw - especially the severely undergraded ones. I'll report back on the "raw" regrades.

Is it still the standard $10. for Moderns and $15. for Classics on regrades?

I sent in 8 and got 0, so if you got 2 your doing good!!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

I have a 54-s Washington and a 77-D Ike that I believe will upgrade and I intend to crack them out before sending them in. One reason is that I can't send them together on the same invoice, and will send them in with some raw coins that I have.

  • Greg-
I totally agree. When even the "slamdunk, totally under-graded" pieces did not receive an upgrade, that is when I gave up and went solely to crack-outs. They take your fees and give you no work for the money!

The sad aspect is their executives just don't understand why they are losing market share. Hello.....??!!

Did a regrade about a month ago. Was super picky about the coins. 8 out of twelve went up. They were all business strike moderns.
  • >On the Q&A forum, didn't Rick M say that all coins get cracked out before the graders see them?

Yes I believe he did say that. In effect its the same as sending them in already cracked. If the coin actually goes down or gets BB'd does it then fall under the grade guarantee since it was already in a pcgs slab or is it tough luck? I sent in 5 coins for a regrade about 5 months ago and got 2 bumps, the most obvious ones.

I have (2) coins in my Registry Set,that IMHO have a chance at upgrade.Others who have seen these agree with me too.Because of the dismal record that your post and others like it,I've been reluctant to submit them.I was thinking of waiting until the Baltimore Show and ask one of the graders to give me an opinion,as to weather or not.

  • I think Rick Montgomery said in the Q&A Forum that regrades had their grade covered before being sent to the graders instead of cracking them out. I may be mistaken, but I believe that is what I read.image At any rate, I'm a "cracker" based on the results of some experiments that I did with crossovers with Morgans. I had much better luck this way.

OK, I tried some of these "failed upgrades" raw at NGC.

Of the 4 coins that I originally sent to PCGS for regrade that failed to upgrade, 1 stayed the same (MS65), 2 upgraded by 1 point (MS64 to MS65, and MS65 to MS66), and 1 upgraded by 2 points (MS64 to MS66).

I'm most surprised at the one that stayed the same. The coin is so nice.

I think I'll try these raw at PCGS now. image
  • Greg,

Sent in one for downgrade -- came back same; 2 Ike experts reviewed and said it was overgraded.

It would be interesting to try the same coins cracked out, submitted via one-day service at a big show.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
