Intercept Shield

I have seen a product called the Intercept Shield System to protect copper coins from environmental damage offered by a dealer on ebay. Has anyone used or seen this box system?

    Chris,

Full details on the product are on our website shown on the signature line below. Also, we have specials for board members. I personally use the product to protect my certified Lincoln collection. I'd be happy to answer any additional questions you have.

  • Use them for all new purchases. Currently moving all coins to them. Cost is about $1 per coin.

  • The Intercept Shield is a great system, especially for copper. Too many of my slabbed Lincolns change in the slab after a while. I have thus put my entire collection in the IS sleeves and believe that the coins will be stabilized. Of course, time will tell, but I sleep a lot better!image

I know Wayne is a big advocate of the system and I wholeheartedly agree!

  • I have been placing every new un-slabbed purchse I make in Intercept 2x2's. Yes they are about a buck a piece, but they are quality with a capital Q.

I have also been upgrading all of my albums to Intercept as I complete collections, and I have been using the intercept boxes for all of my 2x2's. The boxes are $6.95 and house about 35 Intercept 2x2's.

My collection is for my personal enjoyment, but also as a gift to my son which hopefully he won't inherit for another 50 years. However, when he does, I want these coins to well preserved and well organized.

Personally, I can't recommend these highly enough.

Is there anything else that Intercept makes that I could line a PCGS box with or some other box with? I don't really care for their white boxes and white holders for slabs. They're just not appealing visually. I was contemplating purchasing AirTite Cherrywood display cases and lining the interior of the cases with a Intercept Shield type of flat panel ie, one under the slabs. I thought that may do the trick.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks for the help.

That's an interesting idea. I have to agree that the boxes don't thrill me, either, visually speaking. But if they do their job, great.

    Hi everyone
I've been looking into IS and my plans are to move all my raw FS Jefferson's out of the flips and cardboard 2x2 boxes into the nickel kointainers. Then I want to place them into an IS Washington quarter album. This album has the most pages (8) and openings (I'm thinking 188) and the dates are practically the same for most of the Jefferson dates. I've been searching for a way to store my raw coins in a very convenient and safe environment and this is the best plan so for. I like the idea that I'll be able to easily take out any coin and view it without actually touching the coin because it would be in a little round kointain holder.

    FrattLaw,

Currently, IS does not sell the product in a sheet or other way to line another product. They have only the 2X2s (and boxes to hold them), albums and certified coin boxes.

  • I use them for every raw coin. Their research seems solid, and even though Lucent Technoligies is a dog stock, they have sound engineering (founded in the old Bell Labs). I tried the ones for slabs, but it is too tough to review your collection. If you are burying it in a safety deposit box, then it makes sense. If you follow the usual fundamentals of low humidity, dessicants, sealed containers, etc, I have to believe you are ok with the slabs. But if you are highly paranoid, IS is another measure of security.

What a moron that guy is! LOL Incidently, I bought 50 of these little boogers from my local coin shop today. Well let me tell you, I have yet to get a nickel into one of these things. And the instructions say to ease the pieces together while using a thin soft cloth to avoid fingerprints. Easier said then done. But now I might try medical playtex gloves, maybe they will help hold the pieces while I'm twisting them together.

  • I emailed the company asking how long each of their products protects the coins. I couldn't find the information in their reports. This is what they responded:

Under normal conditions the following protection applies:

    Coin albums - 15 years
2 x 2's with box - From our testing, these would be good for at least 30 years.
    Slab Box - 10 years.

I thought it would be useful information for this thread. image

    Hi goyankeez

I had the same question with them concerning the 2x2 inserts and somewhere I read that 10 years was the max for them. I had asked them by phone if I had to buy the plastic again in 10 years because all you think would need replaced are the inserts which will turn black when they go bad. But they said I would have to buy the plastic again. That's a expensive journey if you have 500 or 1000 2x2's to replace every 10 years at over a buck a piece. Maybe the plastic is free and the inserts are what costs.

  • On their FAQ page they say 2X2s in the IS box will be protected for 60 years. Last question.

They didn't have the albums or slab boxes listed on their page, so that's why I emailed them. Then they said the 2x2s with box last at least 30 years.

I got the response a month ago from Michelle Kumpf of IS.

It seems like the 2x2s with box will protect for a very long time, and you shouldn't have to replace them.

But I'm not very familiar with their products, and am just going by what the company said.

    Hi goyankeez
I've located what I thought I have read. It was in the press release section about half way through the page but I think they were referring to the albums.

The protection will last for at least 10 years--and probably much longer, he said. Users will be able to gauge the product’s success, and determine when it needs to be replaced, by observing its color--for while the coins behind the Intercept Shield remain unchanged in appearance, the shield itself will darken in time as it absorbs more and more pollutants. Gradually, it will turn from dark brown to jet black, signaling that it’s time for a new shield.

    While searching I thought this was interesting in the tech section;

This remarkable technology provides 10 years of corrosion protection for each thousandth of an inch thickness, under normally encountered corrosive conditions.

I like your new inf. on the 60 years protection but couldn't find any guarantees for any of the products which is most likely impossible.

wayne, is there a intercetp shield of a 2x2 size? i have not had any desire to switch becuase of the sheer size of the holders, ie. storage of a bust dime now requires literally 10 times as much space w/ the intercept shields. please let me know (PM if that's better)!
