Back from Las Vegas....thanks for the tips guys.

I've decided the only way to make sure what denomination coin the casinos in Vegas are actually still using is to visit them all surreptitiously and check for myself, so I'm heading out tomorrow. If all goes according to plan, when I come home, I'll be buying that complete proof gold type set. If things instead go like they usually do, I'll be selling mint sets on ebay next month for lunch money. I'll report back on Tuesday.image

  • Good luck. WIN BIG!
  • Stay away from the progressive slots, they eat up all your coins!
  • Dollar Slots... the only way to go.

    Good luck Don!

  • craps is fast and furious, i threw the dice for 25 minutes without a 7 at the mirage. the table paid out over $30,000.00 to the folks around the table. i chickened out every 4 th roll and kicked back down to a $10.00 bet. I still did ok that night.

    I used to think that.
Ran into one of those old 'crusty' guys that seems to have a million dollars in his tray all the time.

He told me - "pump it up to $100 right from the get-go play it all, and be prepared to do it two more times"

    We tried it. Result:

    Won $1,200
    Won $800
    Won $1,600
    Lost $100

    Thanks All,

Blackjack is my usual endeavor as I'm not smart enough to play craps, but Dan, I'll try your approach. I like the dollar slots. Once in a while, I go in partners with my buddies and we pull the $100 slots a few times for fun. To tell you how sick I am though, I do plan to visit a few pawn shops close to the strip to look at coins. Who knows, maybe somebody needed a stake and sold the Haversham hoard.image

Blackjack and video poker the only way to go to have a chance with the house... good Basic BJ brings you close to even and if you pick your machines right, can even gain the tinest edge on the house on video poker when considering the comps! And, the odds stink, but when I feel adventurous, I play Let It Ride. I have defied the odds and done pretty good on that game ... Good luck Don!
  • Try 3 Card Poker! It is kind of a new game in the casinos, at least I saw it for the first time last weekend in Tahoe. It was fun, and a nice change from the other games. I won too, not a lot, but won none the less. A three card straight flush pays 40 to 1, the lady next to me hit it on her second hand, up 400 really quick. Sweet.
  • i'll be going to Biloxi this weekend (if the town doesn't drown!!) and hopefully. . .

Do they have nickel slots in NV? When I went to puerto Rico they had tons of nickel shots!! The reason I played? old nickels; I did not find any buffalo nickels but I found some 1939s, plenty fom 1940s including a couple of silver ones (from fine to poor1) and tons from 1950. $20 worth of nickels lasted me the whole night!! I brought home a bag of old nickels!!
  • Craps can be a blast.Like you Don I stayed away from it cause it all seemed complicated.
Its just there are some many ways to bet,its bewildering at first.
Once you do learn it half way and you win alittle ,POW,your hooked.
Its a blast.Especially if the table is hot.Everyone cheers loudly. Its all exciting.

Off the main strip is Sahara coins on Sahara Blvd and Decatur I think.
Nice little coin shop to check out.
And a rinky-dink one in the Rivera shops.(not really recommended but...if your in the area.)
  • Have fun Don, maybe you'll run into some of the Vegas board members. image

Not true! Craps is far easier to play correctly than blackjack. 90% of the craps bets are sucker bets so you can ignore them. Pass line bets are only 1.44% house edge, and "odds" bets on those have NO casino edge. So a pass line bet with 2X odds is only something like a 0.6% casino edge.

Contrast that with blackjack where the house has about a 2% edge even with correct play. To get lower than that you have to count cards and vary your bet size.

To get started on craps, put the minimum bet on the pass line when everyone else does. Then after the point is established (they put that big black and white puck on a number) put a full "odds" bet behind your pass line bet. In Vegas you should always be able to put at least 2X odds (2X your initial pass line bet).

The only trick with odds bets is to make sure the amount of your odds bet can be evenly paid off depending on the point (it can be paid at 6:5, 3:2, or 2:1). If you don't put the right amount, they'll still pay you off, but you might get ripped 50 cents. If you're betting $5, and put $10 odds bets, you don't have to worry as it can always be paid correctly.

Then sit back and collect your money if everyone cheers... or put down another $5. image

Oh yeah, once the point is established, do NOT in any way, shape, or form say or insinuate anything remotely resembling that number that comes after 6 and before 8, or you may be ripped limb-from-limb. Other than that, it's a great crowd game.

He still may not be getting it,,,so i,ll help too.image.The 1st roll of the dice is the `come out roll`
Ok,depending on where all the bets have been placed on the table, someones bound to win on that
first roll.Anyway, your the first guy(shooter) .You want to roll a 7 or 11 right off.If you can keep rolling those
numbers your winning with the usual passline bets,if thats where your chips are.
Roll a 2,3,or12 and its called craps. If you had money on those bets you win,as in the `field bets`Field bet numbers are 2,3,4,9,10,11,12

whew all that and we havent `established `the point`...ok ,After you just rolled the number 11 ,eighty seven times in a row....image you roll a 10.Ok your still shooting. Now ,you wanna roll one more 10 BEFORE you roll the dreaded 7.Keep rolling .Any roll is good...except...that number that rhymes with eleven.

Ok ..2 dollar Yo. 20 on all the hard ways .Nickel on each.double up on my odds bet 5,qnd 9..cmon,baby needs new shoes.cmon shooter ..sixty four..forty six..forty five(four and five =9)...yes winner 9.I had money on the number 9.It pays real good ....WTG...roll ....image

Thanks to all of you for the good wishes and excellent gambling advice. I tried it all. Tad and Cam, I loved craps, and the advice came in very handy. I won a few dollars there. Dan's tip for the dollar slots was a killer too. I won 5 or 6 $300+ jackpots and netted $800+. All in all, I had a great vacation and ate way too much and slept way too little. The Kennedys in the ½ dollar slots looked like they had been beaten into shape by a bad tinsmith. All in all, the gambling wasn't too damaging, even though I had a blackjack dealer like the one Chevy Chase had in Vegas Vacation. I finally beat him (not literally) the last night and got some of my losses back. I'm ready to go again, but I'll have to save up first! image
