1794 Dollars in Heritage Sale-RESULTS JUST OFF THE FLOOR!

HigashiyamaHigashiyama Posts: 2,197 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm sure people have noticed the remarkable pair of 1794 dollars in the upcoming Heritage sale, one graded VF25 the other VF30. Both are nice coins, but the VF30 must be the finest possible in that technical grade. The strike is truly amazing -- in terms of what the market will pay, VF30 must be a very conservative grade.

Any guesses as to what these coins will bring?

I had the pleasure of listening by phone -- here are the results realized a few minutes ago:

VF25 -- $ 52,500 plus 15 %

VF30 -- $ 80,000 plus 15 %.

I love these coins and own a great one. The VF-30 is net graded, it has been repaired/ worked on. Just like the coin that just sold in the Bowers LB sale. Hope this helps. K

Nic -- do you have more details on the VF30? In spite of the leeway given to early classics, if it has been doctored (e.g. -- strengthening of the devices) rather than cleaned, it should not be in a PCGS slab.

I should read rather than just look at the pictures -- I see the reference to repair -- it looks like a planchet flaw was filled in -- I am more comfortable with this than tooling.

Which would members rather have, this one or the VF25?

Still, I think I would take the VF30. It will be interesting to see which coin brings more.

The 30. The reverse of the 25 is just too worn to compare.
58k before bp is my guess.

All sales are interestingimage. A 1794 with initials polished off, in a NGC holder, brought around 125K if my memory serves me. Well struck(rare) AU coin I believe. The VF-30 IS attractive...more than you can say for most 1794's. I'd rather have an untooled/repaired coin, however. All said IMHO. K

If I had extreme interest in this superb coin I would not bid untill the auction was live and I would be there (me or someone else). I think 66,500------------------BigE

That VF30 has XF40 characteristics. Nice coin. Smooth, hard planchet which is somewhat rare on this rare coin.

i wouldn't care if a 1794 dollar was drawn-and-quartered, then glued back together w/ liquid nails, i'd buy any one i could afford. "afford" is the key here, & the 70,000 that someone else mentioned would be a bargain, wouldnt be surprised if it ended up much higher. i would buy the 1 w/ more detail every time.

actually, i think the vf-25 is overgraded. but again, who the he11 cares, it's a 1794 dollar.

BTW, the vf-30 is of course a pcgs net-grade, where the problem should have been mentioned on the slab.

i have an extremely strong preference for original coins too, but you confront reality when considering 1794 dollar. kinda like a 1797 bust half, 1802 half-dime, 1796 dime, or 1823/22 quarter, just on a larger scale. take what you can get/afford.

terrific followup dude! i wasn't far off - guessed that 70K was conservative!

this proves something for me: YOU CANNOT PAY "TOO MUCH" FOR CERTAIN COINS, regardless of what "problems" they have. that's why i was glad to pay for my 1797 half, which is a piece of dogmeat.

    FANTASTIC followup - thanks.

  • I have to say, that no matter how much I like my silver proof moderns and commems,

THAT IS A COIN (the VF30) Imagine the stories it could tell. Imagine what it was like when it was pulled from the dies in 1794. What was the US like then? What could you get for $1? How long did you have to work to get that coin? How many are left in the world (that weren't exported and melted, that weren't worn flat to unrecognizeable plugs?)

    It makes my mind spin.image
