This is the strangest slabbed coin I've ever seen

Foldover

I have never seen one of these.

I didn't know grading companies slabbed these coins. And how did they get a grade out of it?

And for $200 ?

YIKES! I wonder how this legally escaped the mint?!?!?

During the high speed production the Mint machinery creates many mangled products. Quality control catches most of them but due to cost they don't try to catch all of them. Most people other than error collectors never see them and don't even know that stuff like that exists. The grading companies just pretend like it's a normal coin & they grade it the usual way.

man, you guys missed the obvious.

the slabber had a hard time getting a bent coin in the holder and due to a coffee overdose, grabbed the crackout hammer and "forced" the coin into it's coffin!! image with their top-notch QA the mint would never allow something like this out the door. sheesh!!!! the next thing one of you knuckleheads is going to suggest is that the 59 lincoln and those sac-quarter mules really happened. image

    Right Dog,

If the coin is really weird they will grade it. But if its "not weird enough" its gets body bagged!

Is this the same coin that Braddick had in his "what is a coin" thread?

Mine showed a Lincoln cent- same grade though, same holder.
It would be kind of cool to pick up one of each in each denomination.

My question though: Why isn't this in an ANACS "Damaged" holder?!

Anyone noticed how AMERICA is spelled backwards? Part of the die must be stuck in with it somehow or part of that metal area is very thin. Someone probably needed a chisel and hammer to pry that one ont.

It was damaged as a result of the minting process unless someone found it in the gutter somewhere!image

As picky as they are though, I can't believe they assigned that thing a grade.

I think it looks kind of neat. I wouldn't pay $200 for it, but it is neat.

now lemme get this straight. if the coin has a scratch on it - it gets bodybagged. if you submit a twisted hunk of garbage, they slab it.

ok. my faith in the opinion of grading services is restored now that i know the rules.

I don't know.. I think it has some circulation wear. image

  • I actually think the coin looks pretty awesome! I have no idea how they got the grade of MS63, however. It's not worth $200 either, in my opinion.

You could probably bash it with a hammer a few times and get an upgrade to MS64!

  • Brian,
Now THAT is funny. Too bad they couldn't get a date off of it. I'm working on a complete set image
