How do I check for PVC on a coin? Photo Posted!

fcloudfcloud Posts: 12,133 ✭✭✭✭
I have an 1809 Half in which I would like to submit for grading. How do I know if it has pvc on it or not? And if it does, is there a way to safely remove it?

The coin has a nice grey color with a hint of green near the chin (obverse).
The reverse is a pleasing silver/grey that fades to a light gold tone at the rim.
Sorry about the color on the photos. I am trying to make improvement in photos.

    Thanks,

If you're worried that it may have PVC contamination, give it a bath with acetone. It will remove the PVC and won't hurt the coin. I've never had any problems using it.

This is probably about the best I can do with my camera.

The dark spot on the neck is a lighter green color.

    Thanks,

Will acetone remove the patina, or just the pvc?

Tony, it will just remove the pvc and should not do anything to the toning. A little trick I use with my digital camera is to tape a loupe to the lens for close ups( it sounds crude but it really works well). mike
