Other ways to Insure USPS mail?

airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,148 ✭✭✭✭✭
Howdy,

If you remember a few weeks ago I posted about shipping companies and was supplied a link to insure mailings. If you don't remember, I DID!

Now, they only insure priority mail, which it mucho expensivo in my opinion. Does anyone here know of a company that will insure first class without me going to the PO, which is REALLY out of my way (as in two miles at least, one very uphill, by foot)? I want to put a 37c stamp on the padded envelope (or more depending on weight), click "place order" at this website, and have the package magically insured image

If you can give me any help and same my muscles from unnecessary growth, please post below.

Thanks!

Jeremy

I'd like to know the answer to this, as well. I'd like to change my cost structure for insuring my shipments.

I don't care if the cost is the same- or even a tad more... I just normally can't ship unless it's Friday because I have stuff to do after school... this would make my life SOOOOO easy!

  • apnut,
you're gonna have to be able to prove that the package went out the door and was properly packed. once you solve that problem someone will insure it.

    Is priority mail trackable?

I'm not for sure on this but my experience is with delivery confirmation on priorty mail you can track only that it was checked in and when it was delivered. I know it's a pain going to P.O. But be careful on cutting corners on insurance. It only takes 1 time for a problem to arise and not worth it.

Edited to add: if you think about it priorty mail isn't that bad because you can use their boxes, padded envelopes etc. I like this service.

And I can pick that stuff up at the PO? I'll see about that on Friday for future shipments

Yes you can pick up these items at P.O. Usually you can find small boxes, padded envelopes, and large boxes. I like it as I hate looking around for something to pack things in. Maybe pay a little more but you get the packing boxes and any package I've sent or received usually makes it in 48 hours. Hope this helps.

  • I use Stamps.com but then again, I live REAL far away from a regular Post Office (Brazil).

Anyway, I use Priority Mail for all of my shipping because of the distance. It is traceable, i.e. Delivery Confirmation, and insureable. Packages weighing more that one pound must be given to the clerk at the PO or handed to your letter carrier. I'm not sure if you can hand insured/delivery confirmation material to your carrier or if it MUST be presented at the PO. Either way, somebody has to acknowledge receiving it from you to effect your insurance coverage.

Yes, it's slightly more expensive printing your own postage. Each person has to figure where there money is better spent - a long drive and/or long line to/at the PO or the few extra cents to print your own postage at home to hand to your letter carrier. Dave
  • airplanenut - for Priority Mail supplies you can go to the USPS web site and order the supplies for free (You have to accept an agreement not to use the supplies for anything else.) They ship them to your house for free, and it usually only takes a week to get them. You can also order Delivery conf, insurance, and other forms and tape there as well.

    Check out: Supplies.usps.gov
  • Another alternative is UPS Ground which is very comparable and more often cheaper for heavier packages. You may want to compare rates with them and Fedex for smaller packages such as coins. You can even open an account with those two online and do a lot of that business from their websites.

And the insurance is included in the cost of UPS - not sure about Fedex. (Found them a little higher for larger pckgs.) A little bit more of a hassle to collect, but not really too bad.

    Airplanenut,

I'm sending you a PM on the carrier I use and a contact. It does not have to be Priority Mail.

As per UPS- the nearest ground box is more inconvenient image There is a $2 surcharge (even to just drop off a box) at the store in town and time isn't of the essence and weight is minimal- it's just the need for insurance if I send a few certified coins. I could always try airborne and use an independent insurer- it depends on whether the costs would be cheaper in the long run after see what USPS would charge (I think at a certain point Airborne becomes better)

  • I think this issue was covered before. United Parcel, as well as FEDex, Airborne etc. will NOT insure coins!!!!!!! or any negotiable instrument such as bonds, cash, etc. You must be self-insured through a private company. Since all of these companies scan for delivery, you will be able to track the package in case of loss. USPS will insure first class under 13 oz. and will insure any package of priority or overnight up to $25000. The cost for registered is the best and can be tracked from you home computer. Insured(blue tag) can only be tracked for pick and delivery at your post office station. Deilvery confirmation works only if the package is delivered to you post office station but provides no proof of person signing for it. You must used signature confirmation for that. If you're not self insured, use the post office and get some execise. Remember, I used to walk to school through snowstorms when I was 5 years old to get to school.image
