How about silver.Hasn`t our government just about depleted its reserves and will soon be buying it on the open market?

If all that is true, then wouldn`t we see a healthy spike in prices....soon?

Isn`t Warren Buffet heavily invested in silver right now?He may know something.
  • Steve27, The Real Estate Bubble is about to BURST! The smart ones will be out early and a good portion will put that money into GOLD! We havent even seen inflation in most areas yet, causing interest rates to rise, the Dollar to get even weaker, and a flight to GOLD! Dont even tell me the money will go into stocks!

  • vam44, I also like PLATINUM, I own the #1 $100 Set! It also got real cheap, I started to buy when it hit $410, otherwise I wouldnt have put together that set. It got so cheap that it has been moving up at a time when it typically drops(tied to the economy). 1 in 5 items produced uses PLATINUM in some way! My father was buying at $700 and got real depressed, I told him to wait! PLATINUM COINS are becoming a real collectable because of the low mintages! Pay attention to Russia, they control half the Worlds PLATINUM output!

If that dictated value, then why aren`t commemoratives hitting the roof. Some are I guess ,but overall....
  • Cam40, SILVER usually moves at a faster rate than GOLD(storage fees involved)! I havent been too hip on SILVER because of the advent of the Digital Camera, Im not that familiar with the SILVER breakdown, but film has got to be a big player! I would think this would more than make up for the Mints usage.

I agree that real estate prices are likely to drop, in part because they are high by historical standards (e.g. when compared to income), and because of general deflatioary pressures. I also agree that short term, gold may do well, but that expectation is much more speculative than the observation that real estate prices are high.

Longer term, the current global overcapacity of production is likely to persist, and most commodiies are in amply supply. Central banks are quite adept at managing money supply, and with the global overcapacity of production, we are very unlikely to see inflationary pressures. Indeed, global deflation is more of a risk. In this situation, gold is unlikely to do well long term (e.g. -- with a time horizon of more than 5 years). Buying a small amount of gold for diversification of assets is not a bad idea. Making a major portfolio move towards gold would be extremely ill advised.
