Moving towards or away from slabs?

nwcsnwcs Posts: 13,386 ✭✭✭
When I first got back into the hobby, I got a bunch of slabs because I didn't trust my grading -- or anyone else's. I had a reasonable assurance the coin wasn't far off (I only got PCGS slabs). But as I've learned how to grade, I've been finding myself migrating away from the world of slabs (except for >$300 coins) and relying on my own judgment and the merits of the coin. In other words, I don't feel like submitting unless I feel I have a sure-fire winner.

My question: As you've grown in your ability to grade/evaluate coins have you found yourself slabbing more or less? Do you buy more slabs or less?

I still send some coins in for grading, but when I buy, I don't really care (sight seen), and I don't buy expensive coins sight-unseen. I still like the service PCGS/NGC/ANACS sells for the price, because it helps insure liquidity, authenticity, and protects the coin. They have less and less to do with my collecting though.

there is NOTHING wrong w/ getting a second opinion on your grading, and slabs offer that. as long as you remember that it is a second OPINION, not an absolute,

I buy more slabs as I am working on several registry sets, but as a result of studying the slabs, I also buy raw coins that I think are worthy of submitting. I purchased a 52D Franklin that has a great shot at ms65 FBL. it is a FBL without a doubt but it may grade ms64, whatever happens I got the half for $10.

I have been buying raw cal gold and having it slabbed for protection and preservation.
