Some low priced IHCs at Superior Pre-Long Beach

Was watching the auction on ebay live and two common date PCGS MS66RDs went real cheap. Both an 1899 [lot 219] and a 1901 [lot 221] went for only $747.50 including the 15% juice. Though its hard to tell the quality of the coins with Superior's imaging these are a far cry from some recent prices realized.

    Toothpuller,
Very Interesting. As you mentioned, later date top quality IHC Reds in the higher grades have been skyrocketing in price lately. But, some of those Reds look awfully ugly in real life - maybe the Superior offerings were just unattractive, over-graded Indians?image

The 1901 I'm familiar with. It's an attractive coin but has a poorly placed toning spot in front of her face. Combined with a mellowed red tone it's a lower end 66. It sold for almost $200 more in my Central States consignment, so I think this was a very good buy. I get more picky with 66RDs now that many have reached the $1400 range but this coin should retail for closer to $900. Superior didn't light a fire under the internet bidders with their off-color full slab image.

Another coin I once owned was a steal in this Superior sale, and makes me wonder about the PCGS Registry's influence on the series these days. This 1908 NGC 66RD is beautiful despite their image. A nick on its cheek is all that keeps it from a standout 66 -- a major deterent to some collectors -- but it oozes eye appeal. I imaged it when I first purchased my camera and the balance is strong on the red scale, but you get an idea of the toning, lustre, clarity and strike: Obverse, Reverse. Sold for $776.25 with the juice and I wish I had bid!
  • Nothing went high. It was not like some of the recent auctions.

An 1870 PCGS MS65RD went for only 3200 + juice.
    An 1894 PCGS MS66RD went for 2450 + juice.
    AN 1860 PCGS MS66 went for 1500 + juice

Some common date MS65RD NGCs went real cheap. Two 1903s went for 220 and 240, a 1902 for only 180, an 1899 for 240 [all excluding the 15%].

The pickings were thin for MS IHs. The 1870 was your classic heavily woodgrained example from this date, and the 1894 PCGS 66RD sold higher than I thought it would considering the toning.

    Shylock,

Great picture of a beautiful coin!image Wish I could take pictures like that. I have a small subset of my collection that deserve to have some top quality photos taken of them.

I have the equipment, but can never get the light or whatever quite right.image

I talked with a dealer 30 minutes before the auction and he described the offerings as "...garbage...wasted my time coming to LA for this....some dealers leftovers...". It is obviously a over exageration (esp. seeing the 1908 photos) but may help explain some of the low prices.

Shylock, your right, the imaging didn't help much on this sale!

Pushkin -- the problem with that image is I took it in auto mode and was ignorant about the color balance settings, as you can see by the pinkish color of the white NGC slab. The color is closer to Heritage's image, though brighter as with all Heritage pics.
  • Just thought it would be interesting to mention that the 1899 and 1901 MS66RDS from the above Superior auction turned up on Teletrade for sale on Oct. 16. No pics but the description of the 1901 is definitely the same coin.

Well, I saw the 1908 at the LB show (on the bourse) and thought it was a great coin!
