Mint coins??????????

Hello everyone. Opinion please. How many coins of one type (Modern Commemoratives) would you buy to try and get PR69DCAM or MS69 from the mint. And what would you do with the coins that you didn't like. Thanks in advance everyone.

  • I usually don't play that game, but if I did, I would just wait and buy them from a local dealer, that way you can look before you buy and try to get the best quality. You might have to pay a premium, but then again many modern commems sell at a discount from their issue prices.

I've only bought 1 Modern Commem, not from the mint however, and submitted it and it got PR69DCAM. I think if they are still in the original airttite and still packaged, your chances would be pretty good. Of course, as Jtryka says, you can go to a dealer and hand pick the grade you want..........most of them have reasonable prices.

  • Thanks guys for the info. jtryka I though of that way to do things also, BUT what if it were the 1995 Silver Eagle which sold from the mint for say $35.00 and once it was slabbed it became $2500.00. Even dealers who have not had coins slabbed know what they have and what price it would bring. That's mainly why I wont do it that way.

  • I believe your speaking of the 95W Silver Eagle. That particular Eagle was only minted for the anniversary set that came with 4 Gold Eagles.

It has been my experience that to get either an MS-69 or PFDCAM-69 from PCGS you need to buy two coins. I have had four coins submitted and received 3 69s. Both my Buffalos came back as 69s and my CVC came back as 1 68 and 1 69.

As stated above, the 95-W SAE Proof only came as part of a gold set that sold for $999. About 30K of them were sold and that is why one of those in 69 sells for about $2,500. Being certified is not what is causing that coin to be valuable, it is supply and demand.

    Good luck

  • I understand the suppy and demand. And you can always break up a 4 coin set to get the better money.

I only buy a commemorative if I like it. I hate the speculation game cause I always get burned!
  • BobbyD,

good question. I collect modern commens but have mostly been buying siingle raw gold coins (because of cost) although I do have a couple of FDRs and Stadiums. Anyway, I'm preparing to send about 15 coins for grading (half gold, half silver) without any dupes. I'll try to remember to let you know how it turns out.
  • Thanks BSqr,
Please let me know. As of right know I thinks I will be buying 3 of everything and just sending the one I don't like back to the mint.
  • Bobby,

You might be right on the dealers, but my experience is that most dealers don't play the submission games trying to get the high grades for modern commems for a coulple reasons, one, they are trying to run a business that makes most of its money through turnover, and two modern commems aren't really demanding huge premiums for MS/PR 69s, certainly not like modern business strikes. As an example, I just bought a 1988 proof silver eagle to complete my set, and my dealer brought out all 5 that he had in stock and let me pick the one I want. Now granted the 88 is now only a $72 coin, but still he probably could have submitted it. But my dealer does a lot more business in raw coins for us common collectors, so that might be it too. If you are ordering from the mint though, do what you've been doing and return every piece of crap they send you.
  • Thanks jtryka,
    Good info. Thanks man (woman).
