It's difficult to put my finger on it- but it just doesn't strike me as real. I think it's a counterfeit. Do you agree?

looks vaguely polished, but otherwise ok.

78s isn't that rare (4 million struck), and it sure isn't prooflike. More like Karl says, polished like. There appears to be wear or at least rub on the left breast. Seller overrated this coin.

BTW, no information in the PCGS counterfeit detection guide on Trade Dollars.

Obviously the seller doesn't believe his own hype, no reserve and if it was a $7000 coin it would have been graded. I wonder if he intentionally put up a small picture?
  • 1. most counterfeits are made with apparent surface wear making them about vf/xf. the subject coin does not show extensive wear.

    2. the diagnostics appear correct. a typeII obv and rev. many counterfeits fail the diagnostics for obv & rev type.

    3. it does appear to be a super slider. minimal rub on the breast, shoulder and leg. i would hesitate to call it unc.

    4. the coin has an unusual color perhaps added to cover heavy hairlines or...

    5. ????????????? just the seller disclaimers have to make you wonder.

At the risk of answering a question with a question, is there a rim ding at 6 o'clock and is is bad enough warrant a body-bag?

    Braddick,

When I saw that thing my first reaction was fake. After looking at it some more I thought that if it was real it was probably a polished AU, definitely not worth the $200 bid where it is now. In his description the seller hints that the coin was messed with and states there is no return. That is reason enough to stay away.

Thats the same seller with the barber half I just asked about.

The serifs in the legend on the reverse look incorrect to me. But the picture is too poor to be certain. Even if it's real, it's whizzed and I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.
