Gilt?

$5 pattern - gilt

This pattern was struck in copper and then “gilt.” I assume that this means it was plated with gold? Is anyone familiar with the process?

  • Yes, gold plated by the mint.
Gilding is an expression of gold layering. It can be done with gold leaf, or by the plating process.
This particular pattern is known both gilt and in plain copper.
