I feel as odd asking this question as you might feel reading it but....

Do you feel like you have to "get dressed up" to go to auctions like B&M Rareties or anything else where lots of money will change hands? If I roll in with my typical jeans and t-shirt is anyone going to take me seriously? Are the people at the big dollars shows in suit and tie like you'd see in the movies with some svelte, chic young lady at their side? (ok strike that last one.. coin collectors don't "get the babes" like art collectors do)
Is it casual come-as-you-are or will you get looked over for being too casual? My wife knows that If i'm wearing a tie someone either died or is getting married I've noticed that i've been in meetings with bankers doing six figure deals and i'm sitting there in jeans and sneakers while they're in 3 piece suits and using $100 pens and I whip out my 39 cent bic.
I've only been to one national coin show and that was pretty casual, jeans, shorts, sweatpants, whatever but how are the auctions? similar? fancier?

Besides, didn't Walter Breen always wear tie-dyes and no shoes?

A Tax is a fine for doing good.
Most of the money is spent by dealers, who, I assure you, are not dressed up.

Don't you get a little chilly dressing like that in your neck of the woods say around January?

Dog and others are right - them SMELLIES are a problem. The air conditioning at the pre-ANA show in White Plains this year wasn't working very well and "yuck". I think that's one reason so many people disliked the show, but couldn't figure out all the reasons why?
Besides, when the SMELLIES are around, its difficult to get an accurate take on the "sniff test" to help check for AT'd coins!
I already replied to your question but realized I had left something important out - I respect you for having the courage to ask the question in the first place, rather than just wondering or asking in a more private forum. That took guts and hopefully, you will be rewarded with the information you sought.
