  • I am not a Merc collector, but I do a lot of ebay buying. No scan, no certification (I grant everyone their problems with the grading services), and I'm supposed to think this piece is worth about $800. I think not! As I type this, the bid is $49.99 which seems about right for this "mystery" coin. How can anyone tell what it is really worth?

    I sent him an email.

<< <i>You quote the PCGS priceguide. Is this coin PCGS certified? >>

A straightforward question, though I think we all know the answer. I love how the PCGS priceguide is so often quoted for raw, or worse, ACG "certified" coins...

PS- Braddick- that was also my thought. Just as a proof Jefferson usually has Full Steps or a proof Franklin Full Bell Lines. I don't know for certain, but I would imagine that in most cases a proof coin will have these features, due to the increased striking pressure, thus rendering such designations meaningless when applied to proofs- note that they are only used on Mint State pieces. One might wonder if it is even a proof coin at all. There is no way to judge without a picture, despite the seller's obvious skill with the English language and use of adjectives. Sometimes a picture truly is worth the proverbial 1,000 words...

I cannot recall a single instance where an E-bay coin was actually certified by PCGS or NGC and that information was not included in the title. So, the chance that this coin is so certified when it's not even mentioned in the discussion is, well, remote.

I've had one proof mercury dime before.(PCGS PR65) That had Fully Split Bands. From all the pictures that I've seen of proof mercury dimes, they usually do have pretty strong strikes and FSB.
