Kinda unusual item on ebay...anyone have info on this.

I saw this, it is obviously an after market thing, but am curious if anyone knows anything on these...I have seen one in a 1954 again aftermarket.

After Mint packaging. The Mint never produced them like this in 1952. I like the way he drops the "hint" that possibly the mint did thus possibly driving the curiousity seekers to bid.
    The Mint didn't.

  • I agree with braddick - the seller is teasing the unwary and inexperienced buy. By the way, as a Lincoln collector the cent looks horrible! Perhaps it' just the scan but still...pretty unimpressive.

  • He says that the seal pattern matches those of the latter flatpacks exactly. Now I don't have a flat pack here to examine, and I may be cofusing it with the later mint sets but I seem to recall that on at least one of the seams the sealing wheel had the words U S MINT on it and they were impressed into the seal. Was that reproduced as well? I doubt it. Otherwise as far as matching the seals, the sealing wheels were cut with a standard knurled knob pattern. Very easy to reproduce.
  • Aftermarket!
Some dealers, JJ Van Grover comes to mind, do thier own "Mint packaging".
No such animal as a 1952 "flat pack".

I have been reading Numsimatic News for over 20 years, and every once and a while a question comes up on two silver dimes or two cents or two nickels, etc. Alan Herbert's response is always cosistant in saying the packaging can be reproduced. So base on that informtion there is no dubt in my mind that the set is done aftermarket. (And, probably to decive.)

The one in the auction has a "lipped" or "rolled" edge. There is no such edge on the mint produced flat packs I've seen - all 1964's, though. The celo also appears thicker and more "rubbery" than the somewhat crackly stuff the mint was using.
