How do you like your coins?

I thought that this poll would be kinda fun. When you consider your answer, think about the coins you look at first when you go to a show or a shop.

  • When i first walk into a show i look through a bunch of raw stuff to see if i can find any goodies then i go to the slabs to see if their is anything i like
  • I look at the raw stuff to see if there's something someone missed or stuff that the dealer may not have a particular interest in but I might - then I look at the slabbed stuff and try not to drool too much on the counter image

Give me a break.... What was the reasoning behind wording a vote for PCGS that way?

This is one poll that just needs to be ignored.image

  • i look at mostly raw stuff (most slabbed stuff here is key date or very high MS.. both out of my price range) i look for MS-64 rainbow toned morgans in slabs so i know they r not AT.

No reason, just wanted an answer that would reflect those collectors who prefer to buy coin only if they are slabbed by one company. Changed the answer to be more "open". image

Hmm, let me count the ways! Let's see...

I like 'em round, scalloped, square, holed, unholed, proof, Mint State, circulated, raw, certified, American, Irish, British, foreign, medieval, ancient, gold, silver, copper, billon, electrum, colorful, all-white, toned, untoned, even gently cleaned, sometimes even modern. How many ways did I forget to mention? Hundreds. No, thousands. Maybe millions. image

Over 95% of the coins I buy & sell are raw coins.
I've even been known to break the slabs.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Got quoins?

I voted for the last option before reading your post. I must confess that I look at slabs first (in no particular order) but I look at them with various expectations based on the company. Then if time permits OR I am dealing with someone I know well I'll look at raw coins. The reason the raw is last is simply they are predominantly the majority and I could wind up at one table the whole show, so to get around, I make a sweep looking at slabs that call me while searching for what I may be looking for, and time permitting I'll look at raw coins, but I absolutely have to be selective in what I look at due to the sheer volume of raw coins at a show.

When I opened this thread "PCGS" had already been replaced with a blank, and last thing I want to do is get in a pi$$ing contest with anyone, but I feel compelled to ask:

WWBillman, Doesn't the "... a poll to be ignored" comment (and the veracity you sometime display regarding some OPINIONS), completely contradict the ADMIRABLE signature line starement of "...to each his own ..." My apologies up front, but, sometimes I imagine, which I'm prone to do, you jumping up out of your seat at a lodge meeting an the "presiding officer" hammering you down for being out of order. I don't know, I just imagined (there I go again) as this cool collective font of knowledge; not one to wear your disdain out on your sleeve. image

    Doesnt' matter,

Except "I'd rather chew barbed wire while walking on ground glass than buy an ACG slabbed coin!" - most of the time.

  • I look at the pcgs coins first as their grading seems to be most consistent. Then ngc & anacs are considered but they really have to be pq for the grade. "Buy the holder- not the coin!" I buy raw coins on occasion but tend to stay with slabbed coins.
careful- that light at the end of the tunnel might be a freight train!

It seems there are many ways to interpret my signature line. My interpretation is everyone has different tastes, likes, and dislikes. For that reason everyone will never agree on anything. Everyone will never have the same favorite food, color or car. They will never agree on what type of women are more attractive fat/skinny, blond/redhead, or tall/short. They will never agree on toned original/white original, dipped re-toned original/dipped white unoriginal, slabbed/raw, or PCGS/NGC. So everyone is free to choose what they like and makes them happy. Free speech allows everyone to voice their opposing opinions as to their own likes and dislikes in a constructive forum.

BUT my signature line does not allow, condone or extend to peoples perverted, malicious, racial, selfish, or unethical actions based upon their own likes or dislikes. It does not mean I will sit back and not voice my opposing opinion or get pi$$ed off when people make malicious or criticizing comments and opinions.

To single out PCGS in the fist voting option “If its not in a PCGS holder its not a real coin!” without giving the same consideration to the other grading services shows bias and is not objective. As such it deserves no attention.

Sorry Bill, I had no intentions to ruffle any feathers. I get the impression from reading some threads on this forum, that some people here only collect coins that are in PCGS holders. I agreed with your first statement some what so I reworded the first answer to reflect the views of those who only collect coins in one companies holder. I was just curious about people's views towards 3rd party grading in general and I wanted to find out if we had a good base of collectors who also consider coins that are raw.

Once again I apologize if I gave the impression that I was just trying to start an argument.

I am glad that the majority of posters so far have chosen the "I like them all" answer. I don't believe all the "good" coins are slabbed. There still got to be a lot of really good material out there that is still raw!

I buy any nice looking coin that fits into my set slabbed or raw. Selling slabbed coins is a bit easier, but I liberate my coins from the slabs anyway and it feels so good!
