A couple of "newps" - two cent pieces from today's coin show.

Went to my second ever coin show today; Tacoma Dome. Dan and I drove down and hit it at open, left about 2:30, so we spent about 4 1/2 hours there. Probably much longer than the show really warranted, but I'm trying to learn stuff along the way, not just find coins. Dan found nothing to buy since he's so close-minded. But, I found a couple things that struck my fancy.
Landed a 1946-S in MS64 for my Walker short set. This brings me to 60% and back on to the first page. Frankly, the coin seems to have a few too many marks for the 64 grade, but the strike is strong for an S mint coin, and it has loads of luster. It's a winner in the appeal department, so I think that's what squeezed it in to a 64 holder despite the marks. There were some other Walkers I needed, but none that made me want to reach for my money.
Did some heavy negotiating, including all my best tricks, on a couple ANACS slabbed MS64 Morgans that had some heavy and very pretty rainbow toning. One on the obverse, one on the reverse. With both coins the other side was brilliant with a nice gold around the periphery. Alas, while I almost had the dealer down where I wanted him, (I could see him wavering and about to crumble), we didn't quite get there, so I didn't buy the coins.
Bought a handful of 1964 proof sets that, looking through the celo, I thought might have some nice toning on some of the coins. Got back, popped the coins and realized that I need to stop trying to guess while looking through the packaging. One nice lavender Jefferson, nothing else to speak of.
Now, on to the pictures department. Picked up a couple 2¢ pieces that I found quite pleasing.
Big scans here:
1865 two cent obverse.
1865 two cent reverse.
The dealer had this one graded as AU58RB, and wanted $95. I thought it looked more like a CH EF or "maybe" AU50, and brown. We negotiated for a bit, and I got it for $50.
Big scans here:
1867 two cent obverse.
1867 two cent reverse.
Another dealer had this one at EF, and wanted $38. I agreed with the grade and got it for a couple bucks off at $36.
Now, if anybody thinks I'm off on my assessment of these two pieces, feel free to tell me. Frankly, I don't know the first thing about these coins, but I've decided I like them and I'm willing to spend a few dollars to learn.

I have the 4th finest pcgs registry set of all time for the 1/2 cents.
It's one coin graded au-50 LoL.
They aren't really nearly that pinkish, really not much pinkish at all. I'm just still having problems getting my lighting down for old copper. New copper, no problem. Old silver, no problem. Old nickel, new nickel, no problem. Proof coins, no problem. I just can't seem to get it right with old copper. Need to practice more.

They are nice looking coins.
<< <i>Dan found nothing to buy since he's so close-minded >>
ahhh-huh... I seem to remember a certain noob JFK collector some time back working on his first registry set.
You think he was buying 2 cent pieces? Nope.
Russ is such a dork.
Funny how much of the show was a re-hash of last week though. Nothing really new. Just can't seem to get excited about anything but Halves. Must have something to do with being about 60% through with my first registry set.
