    Is the doubling straight up to the North? Could be a Class IV-one I've never heard of. I'll be checking those 1987 Proof sets. Nice coin!
  • If the doubling looks flat, you've got machine doubling. It's almost impossible to tell from the scan. Hopefully you've found something. Good luck! image
  • Sometimes a coin doesn't get out of the way of the die after it has been struck. That damages the die similar to clashing with no planchet. Subsequent products of that die have a second, off-center image. That's what this cent looks like to me. There is a name for this type of error, but I can't remember it.
    The strangest things seem suddenly routine.
